A Country in Quarantine: Photographs From a COVID Road Trip
When Los Angeles–based photographer Brian Bowen Smith started his road trip across America in the midst of the COVID-19 quarantine, he expected to be gone for two weeks. The end result was three times that long.
“We were not expecting so many people to respond and want to be involved,” Smith said, referring to his BBS Drivebys series. “This altered our path immensely and took over six weeks and 11,000 miles.”
The photographs, which Smith shot through the window of his vintage Ford pickup truck, originated from a photo shoot with his family friend. “I drove into her driveway and photographed her,” Smith said. “When I showed my wife, she loved it and said I should continue to do more.”
Smith’s inbox was flooded with messages from people expressing interest in participating in the project, but he didn’t want to shoot just anybody—there needed to be meaning behind each image. From a mask-clad Elvis impersonator in Las Vegas to a cowboy in Colorado, Smith’s subjects hailed from vastly different communities and backgrounds. However, there was still a common thread between them.
“Everyone I spoke to seemed to be in the same boat. They are scared and frustrated,” Smith said. “Most just want to get back to their normal life.”
Reese recently took part (via video) in a tribute to director/producer Lynn Shelton, who recently passed away. Lynn was an executive producer for Little Fires Everywhere, and directed episodes of that series plus The Morning Show. Watch the tribute below – Reese comes in at about 35 minutes. Reese appeared on Miley Cyrus’s Instagram Live series ‘Bright Minds’ yesterday – ‘Bright Minds’ is about “Connecting w/ special guests discussing how to stay LIT in dark times!”. They talked about how they’re managing with being quarantined, ‘must watch’ movies, how Reese picks her roles, how she’s managing anxiety at the moment, supporting small, female-led businesses, and how Madeline’s house in Big Little Lies was the same house used for Miley’s show Hannah Montana!
With it being December 1st, we thought it would be fun to do something Reese-themed to mark the festive season. So how about a Reese Witherspoon Advent Calendar?! We will aim to upload photos in the Gallery every day leading up to Christmas, some of which will be some fabulous rare photos – so you’ll have Reese Witherspoon treats each day. (We apologise in advance if we miss a day or two!) We likely won’t post each update here on the main site – so check the Gallery daily, and we’ll post each day on our Twitter feed.
To start with, additional high quality photos from the Shine On With Reese Launch and the recent LA Dance Project Gala have been added:
The highly anticipated music video for Ariana Grande’s new single ‘thank u, next‘ was released this evening, and features her take on Legally Blonde! As has been teased across the internet for days, the video re-created scenes from popular rom-coms Mean Girls, Bring It On, 13 Going on 30 and of course Legally Blonde – they even recreated the ‘bend & snap’ with Paulette herself, Jennifer Coolidge! Reese tweeted her support of the video as well. Watch the video for yourself:
