Preview: Oprah Winfrey hosts panel on impact of Time’s Up campaign

Some of the most prominent women in Hollywood open up to Oprah Winfrey about the impact of the Time’s Up campaign on raising awareness of sexual harassment in the workplace, and what they’d like to see in the future, in a revealing discussion to be broadcast on CBS’ “Sunday Morning” January 14.

Actresses America Ferrera, Natalie Portman, Tracee Ellis-Ross and Reese Witherspoon, producer Shonda Rhimes (“Scandal”), Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy, and attorney Nina Shaw gathered with Winfrey in Pasadena, California, earlier this week to talk about the efforts to bring change to how women are treated in the entertainment industry and around the world.

“There’s moments that you have to evaluate whether silence is going to be your only option,” says Witherspoon. “And certain times that was our only option. But now is not that time.”

Witherspoon talks about the fact that she was sexually assaulted by a director when she was just 16.

There is no playbook for these times, Winfrey notes, especially when it comes to how people should talk about the topic — or to each other.

“How do we as a society have a mature, nuanced conversation about how men and women should be relating to each other?” Winfrey asks. “Because there’s so many men and women now who are uncomfortable in their workplaces because of all that’s been uncovered and aren’t just really sure how to be. What do we say to them?”

“We’re humans. We’re all humans,” replied Portman. “And I think it’s treating people as fellow humans … it’s not because you have a daughter that you respect a woman, it’s not because you have a wife or a sister. It’s because we’re human beings, whether we’re related to a man or not. We deserve the same respect.”

As expected, Reese Witherspoon attended the Golden Globe Awards last night, and was quite the star of the show not to mention an inspiration to all! Big Little Lies was nominated for 6 awards and won one award in every category it was nominated in, including Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television – this of course meant Reese was honoured for her work as a producer on the show. Glamour Reese sends a massive congratulations to Reese and the entire cast and crew for their well deserved wins last night and for the on-going success and love the show is receiving – we’re so proud of Reese! Reese used her speech to highlight the bravery of the women who have come forward in the last year with stories of abuse and harassment, and Reese vowed to continue telling their stories and raising awareness of the issue. Backstage, the cast talked about the reasons for wearing black tonight, the bond between the cast, and of course season 2 of the show! You can watch the acceptance speech and backstage interviews below.

In addition, Reese also presented her friend and A Wrinkle In Time co-star Oprah Winfrey with the Cecil B. de Mille Award.

Reese walked the red carpet with friend Eva Longoria, to show support for the Times Up movement. Reese also posed with Halle Berry, Ashley Judd, Salma Hayek, Emma Stone, Billie Jean King, Geena Davis and Sharon Stone. Most of the attendees – male and female – wore black, again to show their solidarity for those who have come forward with stories of abuse and harrassment. Reese wore a custom Zac Posen gown, with Jimmy Choo shoes and Bulgari jewellery.

Stars at the Golden Globe Awards this coming Sunday will be wearing a pin to show their support for the Times Up movement – Reese led the charge in getting this pin made. Reese was also instrumental in setting up the Times Up movement.

Time’s Up Pin: The Story Behind Golden Globes’ Timely Red-Carpet Accessory

To design the button, Reese Witherspoon tapped designer Arianne Phillips, who is now calling on the fashion industry to donate money to the Time’s Up fund, too.

The hottest accessory on the Golden Globes red carpet on Sunday will be the Time’s Up pin, expected to be worn by leading ladies and men alike to draw attention to the sexual harassment prevention initiative launched Monday by Shonda Rhimes, Reese Witherspoon, Emma Stone and other prominent Hollywood women.

Witherspoon asked costume designer and stylist Arianne Phillips (Kingsman, Nocturnal Animals, W.E.) to design the pin during a private meeting last month at CAA where the Time’s Up initiative was hatched by studio heads, producers, agents and actresses who split into discussion groups to tackle different aspects of the issue.

“I was probably one of very few women there who would be considered below-the-line,” says Phillips, referring to her role as a costume designer; she also has worked on fashion projects with Prada, Mr. Porter and Jeremy Scott over the years, and with pop stars Madonna and Lenny Kravitz on their onstage wardrobe.

“Reese asked me to come to the actors’ group, and told me they were going to be wearing black and would I consider creating a pin for the nominees and male presenters. We were up against the holidays, but I said I could do it, and the first person I called was my partner-in-crime, [Los Angeles jewelry designer] Michael Schmidt.”

Apple Developing ‘Are You Sleeping’ Starring Octavia Spencer

Apple is developing a new original drama series entitled “Are You Sleeping,” starring Octavia Spencer.

Created and written by Nichelle Tramble Spellman, the series will be produced by Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine and Chernin Ent/Endeavor Content.

The series is based on Kathleen Barber’s novel of the same name, which gives a glimpse into the obsession with true crime podcasts and “challenges its viewers to consider the consequences when the pursuit of justice is placed on a public stage.” Sarah Koenig, the creator and producer behind true crime podcast “Serial,” will consult on the series.

“Are You Sleeping” is the second project Apple has teamed with Witherspoon and Hello Sunshine on so far. In November 2017 the streamer ordered a drama set behind-the-scenes of a network morning talk show from Hello Sunshine. (Witherspoon is also set to star alongside Jennifer Aniston in it.)

“Are You Sleeping” is executive produced by Witherspoon and Lauren Neustadter for Hello Sunshine, and Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and Kristen Campo for Chernin Ent., alongside Spencer and Tramble.

Reese Witherspoon and Eva Longoria to Walk 2018 Golden Globes Red Carpet Together

Women in Hollywood are preparing to make a statement at the 2018 Golden Globes.

As the countdown continues for the start of award season, two beloved actresses are teaming up for Sunday’s big show.

E! News has learned Reese Witherspoon and Eva Longoria will walk the red carpet together Sunday night in support of Time’s Up.

The movement launched on New Year’s Day aims to promote equality and safety in the workplace. The initiative also addresses legislation, corporate policy and hiring practices.

According to the New York Times, Time’s Up has also been urging women to wear black at the Golden Globes to use the red carpet as an opportunity to raise awareness about the initiative.

“This is a moment of solidarity, not a fashion moment,” Eva shared with the publication. “For years, we’ve sold these awards shows as women, with our gowns and colors and our beautiful faces and our glamour. This time the industry can’t expect us to go up and twirl around. That’s not what this moment is about.”

Jennifer Aniston, Shonda Rhimes, Meryl Streep, Natalie Portman, Emma Stone and Rashida Jones are just some of the many Hollywood stars also supporting the initiative in various ways.

The Blast was first to report Eva and Reese’s red carpet news.

Powerful Hollywood Women Unveil Anti-Harassment Action Plan

Driven by outrage and a resolve to correct a power imbalance that seemed intractable just months ago, 300 prominent actresses and female agents, writers, directors, producers and entertainment executives have formed an ambitious, sprawling initiative to fight systemic sexual harassment in Hollywood and in blue-collar workplaces nationwide.

The initiative includes:

— A legal defense fund, backed by $13 million in donations, to help less privileged women — like janitors, nurses and workers at farms, factories, restaurants and hotels — protect themselves from sexual misconduct and the fallout from reporting it.

— Legislation to penalize companies that tolerate persistent harassment, and to discourage the use of nondisclosure agreements to silence victims.

— A drive to reach gender parity at studios and talent agencies that has already begun making headway.

— And a request that women walking the red carpet at the Golden Globes speak out and raise awareness by wearing black.

Called Time’s Up, the movement was announced on Monday with an impassioned pledge of support to working-class women in an open letter signed by hundreds of women in show business, many of them A-listers. The letter also ran as a full-page ad in The New York Times, and in La Opinion, a Spanish-language newspaper.

“The struggle for women to break in, to rise up the ranks and to simply be heard and acknowledged in male-dominated workplaces must end; time’s up on this impenetrable monopoly,” the letter says.
