A brand new trailer for Penelope has touched down over at Yahoo! Movies. It’s different from the previously released trailers and also features a lot of new shots of the adorable Reese playing Annie. You can view screencaptures in the gallery. The movie is scheduled for a February 2008 release.
As earlier reported, Penelope was recently dropped by IFC films. IFC acquired domestic theatrical rights for Penelope last year at Toronto. It set release dates in April and then again in August before pulling the plug as part of its move to focus on its core business of smaller-budget indies. IFC was partnered with the Weinstein Co., which had acquired TV and homevid rights. Now it seems according to Variety, as if Summit Entertainment has acquired North American distribution rights.
Summit co-chair Rob Friedman made the announcement Wednesday. “It is the kind of material that will allow our marketing group to really shine,” he said.
Futhermore, Summit plans the film to be released on February 1st, 2008!
According to Indie Wire, Penelope was dropped by IFC films and is going to be released on February 2008 with another studio. Here’s an excerpt from the article:
A theatrical release of Mark Palansky’s Penelope, the Toronto ‘06 premiere starring Reese Witherspoon which had been scheduled to open this Friday, was recently dropped. With no larger-budget releases on its longterm slate, IFC is instead focusing on its emerging IFC First Take label that simultaneously releases independent and foreign language films in theaters and via cable TV video-on-demand services.
Acquired jointly by IFC Films and The Weinstein Company out of Toronto last year (with IFC handling North American theatrical distribution and TWC taking home video), Penelope was initially slated for a wide release in April but ten days before opening day, IFC publicly announced that the film had been bumped to August 17th. A Type A Films production that was financed and produced by Stone Village Pictures, the film was written by Leslie Caveny and also stars James McAvoy, Catherine O’Hara and Peter Dinklage.
In recent weeks, it became clear that IFC would not be releasing Penelope and indieWIRE has confirmed that the film’s producers are planning a February 2008 release with another company.
Bad news – Penelope has been delayed again. The film was originally supposed to be released this April, then the studio pushed it back to August 17, which now has been pulled to an unknown release date. No word on when the new release is, but hopefully we’ll hear something soon! I know we’ve been itching to see this film for such a long time already.
Penelope will have an advance screening at the ninth annual CineVegas Film Festival. The festival runs June 6-16 at the Palms Casino Resort and the Brenden Theaters.
Penelope is listed in the Sure Bets category and is scheduled to be screened on Friday, June 15 and Saturday, June 16 at the Brenden Theaters.
Tickets are available if you want to check out Penelope before it is released in US theaters on August 17, 2007.
Here’s to hoping Miss Witherspoon will attend! Thanks to walktheline80 for the heads up!

I loved reading fairy tales as a child—or better yet, having them read to me—and now my daughter loves them too! The adventures of those beleaguered princesses, so often the youngest, most beautiful, and least appreciated, were magical. Fairy tales tell us who we are and how to live. That’s why they are so powerful. It’s not often that a brand-new tale appears in the world. So imagine my surprise and delight when I discovered . . . Penelope!
Sprung from the brilliantly original brain of Leslie Caveny, Penelope appeared on my desk one fine spring day. I loved the story from the moment I read it, and Penelope came to life in my imagination long before she stepped on-screen.
