Reese Witherspoon, Lionsgate Teaming on Fantasy Trilogy ‘The Outliers’

Lionsgate has acquired feature film rights to Kimberly McCreight’s upcoming trilogy “The Outliers” with Todd Lieberman, David Hoberman, Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea producing.

Lionsgate touted the deal as marking another move into becoming a dominant player the young-adult genre following the successes of “The Twilight Saga” and “The Hunger Games.”

Story centers on a young woman who’s best friend goes missing and turns up in a remote spot in the woods with a group called the Outliers, who claim to be able to harness “intuition” and turn it into a powerful psychological weapon. She joins the Outliers but soon finds herself running for her life.

HarperCollins acquired North American publishing rights to McCreight’s upcoming trilogy earlier this year. The first book in the series will be published in late 2015. McCreight’s debut novel “Reconstructing Amelia” appeared on the New York Times hardbound bestseller list the first week after publication.

Witherspoon and Papandrea are producing through their Pacific Standard shingle. Lieberman and Hoberman are producing through their Mandeville Films banner, under which they produced Summit Entertainment’s “Warm Bodies” along with Papandrea.

“Warm Bodies” took in $117 million worldwide last year.

Erik Feig and Meredith Milton will oversee the project for the studio. Laura Cray will oversee the project on behalf of Mandeville Films. Robert Melnik negotiated the deal on behalf of the studio.

McCreight is represented by Resolution and Marly Rusoff & Associates Inc.

Reese was honoured by Elle for their annual Women In Hollywood celebration, and to coincide with that, she appeared on the cover of their November 2013 issue. Reese took up 2 pages in their spread for the honourees, with a new photoshoot and interview. Read a couple of quotes from the interview below, and find the full thing in the Gallery.

The Thai and Finnish editions of Elle have both reprinted this US cover for their recent issues. See those covers in the Gallery as well.

Reese Witherspoon, on what inspired her to begin producing movies: “I started noticing a couple years ago that I wasn’t seeing women as the stars of movies. I’m seeing them as the guys’ girlfriends, or so-and-so’s wife. I just thought: God, if I don’t start buckling down and start producing some movies, what’s my daughter going to see in the movies?”

Reese Witherspoon, on how her children changed her life: “Somebody was saying to me the other day, ‘Oh, people get less interesting when they have kids.’ I just don’t think that’s true. I feel like I was so confused before I had kids, I almost got in my own way. Having kids made me clearer about who I was as a woman. I just wanted to exhibit good qualities for my daughter. I was a little competitive before I had kids—probably really competitive, to be honest. It really made me let go of that.”

Reese Witherspoon to Star in ‘Wild’

Reese Witherspoon is set to star in “Wild” for Fox Searchlight, which has acquired worldwide rights to scribe Nick Hornby’s (“An Education”, “High Fidelity”) adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s NY Times #1 best-seller.

Pic will be produced by Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea through their Pacific Standard banner with River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad. Fox Searchlight’s Claudia Lewis and David Greenbaum will oversee the project.

Strayed’s book recounts how she hiked 1,000 miles alone on the Pacific Crest Trail following years of destructive behavior in the wake of the dissolution of her marriage and her mother’s death.

The film is slated to begin production in the late fall once a director is in place.

“We are so excited to be working with Fox Searchlight to bring ‘Wild’ to the screen,” Witherspoon said in a statement. “It is an extraordinary company that continually strives to bring original, inspirational films to the marketplace. We are thrilled to collaborate with them on ‘Wild.’”

Reese graces the cover of the new issue of UK Red magazine, with photos from her 2012 Elle magazine photoshoot alongside what seems to be a new interview. Check out the cover in our Gallery, and the interview below. I’ll be on the hunt for scans!

Reese Witherspoon New baby, new production company and two of the best roles of her career – Reese Witherspoon is at the top of her game. She talks ambition, inspiration and why her girlfriends keep her sane, with Rosamund Dean.

There are some actresses who are so adored on screen, you almost don’t want to meet them, in case the reality doesn’t live up to the fantasy. Reese Witherspoon is one. This is the woman who taught us the ‘bend and snap’ in Legally Blonde, played Rachel’s little sister in Friends, and won an Oscar as resilient, conflicted June Carter in Walk The Line.

Sitting in the bar of the Beverly Hills Hotel where we are to meet for afternoon tea, I wonder: how can the real Reese Witherspoon possibly compete? Then, she strides in, all impenetrably dark sunglasses and stylish black sweater thrown over a red Carven dress.

For a second, she looks intimidating, but then the glasses come off, that megawatt smile comes on and I relax. She actually is the charming southern belle we know and love, her conversation peppered with ‘y’know’ and ‘y’all’.

‘Yeah, people definitely hug me a lot, and hand me their babies,’ she says of her girl-next-door image. ‘But it’s better than people throwing stuff at me, right? I’m always met with smiles.’

Nick Hornby To Adapt Cheryl Strayed Memoir ‘Wild’ For Reese Witherspoon And River Road

EXCLUSIVE: After seeing so many of his novels turned into films, Nick Hornby is taking on the work of a peer. He has signed to write the script for Wild, the bestselling Cheryl Strayed memoir that Pacific Standard’s Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea have set up with River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad. Witherspoon and Papandrea will produce with Pohlad, who’ll finance development.

In Wild, Strayed tells the inspiring story of a woman who tries to rebuild her shattered life by taking on a mission not seen in film since Forrest Gump ran across the country. Traumatized by the death of her mother and then the breakup of her marriage, Strayed made the impulsive decision to try regaining her mojo by taking on an 1100-mile solo hike along the Pacific Crest Trail from the Mojave Desert through California and Oregon to Washington State. Despite no experience in long-distance hiking, she succeeded and in the process pulled herself back together. Wild is among several female-driven projects that Witherspoon and Papandrea have put in development since they formed Pacific Standard last March; others include the Gillian Flynn novel Gone Girl, Mitch Larson’s Pennyroyal’s Boot Camp, and Pharm Girl. Just as important, Wild creates an opportunity for Witherspoon to play a strong heroine, the role she shines in most brightly.

The Hollywood Reporter has a new article about three of Hollywood’s current most popular authors and the stars who are bringing their books to the big screen. Gillian Flynn, who wrote Gone Girl – which Reese bought the film rights too – is one of the authors, and poses alongside Reese for a photoshoot for the publication.

See the photo in our Gallery and read the blurb that came with it below. Read THR’s interview with Gillian Flynn at their website (there is no mention of Reese in it).

Gillian Flynn and Reese Witherspoon, Stephenie Meyer and ‘The Host’ Cast: Authors With Their Stars

Three of The Hollywood Reporter’s most powerful authors pose with the talent who will bring their characters to life.

‘Gone Girl’

Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl drew the attention of Reese Witherspoon, who read the novel before it was even published on a recommendation from screenwriter Leslie Dixon. Witherspoon says she was impressed with the way Flynn was able to effectively tell the story from both male and female perspectives while also employing a nonlinear structure. “It’s just an incredible feat that Gillian was able to accomplish,” she says. “You really can’t anticipate where it’s going, but it’s one of those books you can’t stop reading.” The adaptation rights went to Fox in a summer auction for a reported $1.5 million; Witherspoon, Bruna Papandrea and Dixon are producing.
