• This is an ‘unofficial’ sequel to the massively successful 1989 TV mini-series Lonesome Dove. Return To Lonesome Dove was followed by TV series Lonesome Dove: The Series (1994) and Lonesome Dove: The Outlaw Years (1995), neither of which involved Reese.
• Nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Individual Achievement in Cinematography for a Miniseries or a Special for Kees Van Oostrum, won at the American Society of Cinematographers Awards for Outstanding Achievement in Cinematography in Mini-Series for Kees Van Oostrum.

– Ferris: “Did you ever want anything so bad you’d do anything to get it?”

• Chicago Tribune: “There’s the evil landowner (Oliver Reed) and his young wife (Reese Witherspoon), both fond of Newt in, respectively, paternal and romantic ways. There’s Gus’ half-Mexican daughter (Nia Peeples), hiding her identity on the trail and waiting to kill Call. All of them lack complexity, and most speak their lines as if auditioning to be impressionists in Vegas lounge shows.”
• Entertainment Weekly: “Return works up a love interest for Newt—Reese Witherspoon as the flirtatious wife of a ranch owner—but doesn’t develop this character beyond the sad puppy he was the first go-round. Stick around for seven hours and you’ll find that this is a perfectly decent Western; you might even shed a tear or two. But you’ll also know that, when it’s finished, a grand piece of TV mythmaking has been reduced to a horse opera. C+”
• The Movie Scene: “But all of these actors and others including Oliver Reed, Louis Gossett Jr. and a young Reese Witherspoon do a good job and deliver superior characterisation than you normally expect from a made for TV western.”
Reese did not do any promotion for this series that we are aware of.
