Reese Witherspoon and Debra Siegel launched Type A Films (aka Type A Productions) around 2000. The name comes from an early nickname of Reese’s – Little Miss Type A. Reese wanted to start her own company to be able to produce quality films for young women. Her success with Legally Blonde allowed Type A Films to expand and get more recognition in the industry.
Originally, Type A was based at Intermedia Film, but moved to Universal when the original contract expired in October 2002. Universal gets first grabs at any of the projects Type A takes on, and in return covers the overhead for the company. One of the reasons Reese was drawn to Universal was the ability to work in several genres and different budgets.
Jennifer Simpson was named the prexy of Type A Films in 2002. Simpson oversees acquisition, development and production of all projects and she reports and works closely with Reese. “I am very excited to be working with Jennifer,” said Witherspoon in 2002. “She has amazing taste, and I’m looking forward to all we can accomplish together.” Prior to joining Type A, Simpson was head of development and production for Barry Mendel Prods. She worked on such projects as The Sixth Sense and The Royal Tenenbaums.
Type A Films’ first credit was Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003). One of the reasons why Reese agreed to do a sequel for Legally Blonde in the first place was be able to produce the film. Type A Films also produced Penelope, which stars Christina Ricci, and their next venture will be Four Christmases. Type A Films have several upcoming projects on their plate and more information on them can be found in the rumored projects section.
“The actor thing is easy. I used to grumble about long days – the producer’s days are even longer. You have to get the money; you have to ask people to do favors for you. It’s horrible. When it comes together it’s really exciting.” – Reese on producing.
