Hoping to get under Renata’s (Laura Dern) skin, Madeline (Reese Witherspoon) organizes a trip to compete with Amabella’s (Ivy George) birthday party. After another argument, Celeste (Nicole Kidman) succumbs to Perry’s (Alexander Skarsgård) charms before their first session with Dr. Amanda Reisman (Robin Weigert), a therapist. ‘Big Little Lies’ Opener Draws 2.1 Million Multi-Platform HBO Viewers, Lifts ‘Girls’

The Sunday 9 PM premiere of HBO’s limited mystery series Big Little Lies, starring and produced by Reese Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman, drew 1.1 million linear viewers and a total of 2.1 million viewers, factoring replays and viewing on the HBO Go/Now platforms (including Monday’s digital viewing). This was up 42% from the debut of HBO’s previous high-profile limited series, the acclaimed The Night Of (774,000 in linear premiere).

BLL also was up 48% from the debut of Vinyl in the same slot a year ago. It was off from the big recent debut of breakout sci-fi drama series Westworld (3.3 million in multi-platform viewing).

Big Little Lies‘ viewership held steady throughout the hour. Not surprisingly, BLL has become HBO’s most female-skewing hourlong series, with women comprising 57% of its audience.

That helped veteran comedy series Girls at 10 PM. With BLL as a lead-in, the second episode of the influential series’ final season drew 708,000 linear viewers, up 36% from the season debut last week. For the night, Girls’ tally crossed the 1 million viewer mark. (The show’s first episode has amassed nearly 2 million viewers to date.)

Girls led to the series premiere of the new Pete Holmes comedy series Crashing, executive produced by Girls executive producer Judd Apatow. The male-skewing half-hour did OK, drawing 540,000 linear viewers at 10:30 PM and 763,000 for the night. That was up 54% from the recent 10:30 PM HBO comedy debut of Issa Rae’s acclaimed Insecure and 26% over the most recent season opener of Togetherness, which followed Girls last year.

BLL’s tally is projected to climb significantly. On average, HBO ongoing and limited drama series, including Westworld and The Night Of, have garnered nearly 80% of their viewing outside of premiere Sunday nights.

Reese is currently in new Zealand where she is filming A Wrinkle In Time, and she sent a video message and then phoned in to NZ radio station The Edge, where she chatted about the country and the movie.

Watch her message here, and listen to her radio interview here.

Reese Witherspoon on New Zealand: ‘You can’t capture it in pictures’

Reese Witherspoon says her Instagram feed, full of pictures taken on her trip to New Zealand, doesn’t do the country’s beauty justice.

“It’s the most beautiful country in the world – I’ve made a lot of movies all over the world, but this is my favourite place I’ve ever shot,” she told radio station The Edge on Friday.

“You can’t capture it in pictures. I would say to anybody who comes to New Zealand, don’t just bring your iPhone – you need a major, amazing camera.”

Witherspoon, who won an Oscar for her role in Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, is in New Zealand shooting Disney film A Wrinkle in Time with co-stars Oprah Winfrey, Mindy Kaling (The Office), Chris Pine (Star Trek), Storm Reid (12 Years a Slave) and Zach Galifianakis (The Hangover).

“We are making a movie,” she told hosts Jay-Jay, Dom and Randell. “I know it looks like I’m just having fun with my girlfriends.”

In the film, New Zealand stands in for the planet Uriel, a mountainous utopia populated by centaurs.

“We needed sort of magical locations because it’s about going to other universes,” said Witherspoon.

She promised to come back for a proper holiday.

“The food is wonderful, the landscapes are gorgeous, but most importantly the people have been so kind and so friendly, and have opened up their homes. We have all been just so touched by what a beautiful experience it has been.”

Though she wouldn’t tell what it’s like flying across the seas on Oprah’s private jet, she did reveal just where she keeps her Oscar.

“I keep it in my living room, and anyone who picks it up has to do a speech.”

Reese Witherspoon Teams with Birchbox to Curate a Limited Draper James-Inspired Beauty Box

Reese Witherspoon‘s a serious #girlboss.

On top of running her super-successful Southern lifestyle brand Draper James, she’s starring in (and executive producing!) HBO’s latest hit series Big Little Lies and now, the 40-year-old star just teamed up with Birchbox to curate two custom limited edition boxes filled with beauty and fashion goodies inspired by prints from the Draper James spring collection.

And the best part? The box was made to celebrate Women’s History Month and appropriately named “Pretty Mighty.”

“We are so excited to team up with Birchbox — another dynamic, female-founded company, to celebrate Women’s History Month,” Witherspoon said. “We had a lot of fun putting the box together to honor all of us – mothers, sisters, friends, daughters and coworkers — as the powerful women that we are.”

Subscribers can opt out of receiving their personalized March beauty box to get their hands on this limited box filled deluxe-size samples of Reese’s favorites: Benefit’s POREfessional Primer, R+Co’s Dallas Thickening Spray (for those big Southern curls!), the Clarins Hydra Essential Silky Cream, ARROW’s Color Enhancing Lip Balm and the Davines OI Shampoo + Conditioner. “It may look dainty, but inside you’ll find powerful, high-performing products for equally powerful women — just like you,” Witherspoon says in a personalized note card included in every box.

But if you’re a true Draper James and beauty fanatic, the other limited box (which can be purchased without a subscription) is for you. On top of tons of powerhouse favorites like Dr. Jart+’s Pore Minimalist Sheet Mask and Bioderma’s Cleansing Water, for just $58, you also get an exclusive Draper James makeup pouch and jewelry tray that can’t be found anywhere else.

First-time Birchbox subscribers can sign up by March 24 to receive their own “Pretty Mighty” custom-curated Reese Witherspoon beauty box. The limited edition Birchbox + Draper James box hits stores and online March 6.

The first episode of Reese’s new HBO limited TV series Big Little Lies aired last night, and it lived up to our expectations!! The show was a smart mix of drama, romance, comedy and thriller and I really liked the pace of the episode and the complexity of the characters. Reese was on fire as the tour-de-force of Madeline; she started the episode with a whirlwind of one-liners and strong opinions, however, softened as the episode went on and showed us many layers to her character. I’m really excited to see more of Madeline, and the show in general. HD screencaptures from the episode have been added to the Gallery for your enjoyment, and don’t hesitate to leave a comment here or send us a tweet with your thoughts on the show – we’d love to hear from you!

Further down this post are a clip from the episode, and a behind the scenes look at the episode with commentary by Reese.

Series premiere. In the affluent beachfront community of Monterey, CA, a fundraiser for the local elementary school has gone horribly wrong–someone is dead, and school moms Madeline Mackenzie, Celeste Wright, Jane Chapman and Renata Klein may have had something to do with it. Though the victim and perpetrator remain a mystery, it’s clear that the battle lines leading to this fateful night were drawn at first-grade orientation a few weeks earlier, when Renata’s daughter Amabella accuses Ziggy, son of new arrival and single mom Jane, of hurting her during class. Madeline, who recently befriended Jane and who has a pre-existing beef with Renata, sticks up for the mother and her little boy. Later, Madeline bristles when her teen daughter Abigail opines that her mom is still infatuated with her ex, Nathan, and his new wife Bonnie–a feeling shared by Madeline’s husband Ed. Meanwhile, after Madeline’s best friend Celeste fills in her husband Perry about the kerfuffle at school, the couple end up in an unexpectedly volatile argument.
