‘Red Tails’, ‘This Means War’ Top Home Entertainment Charts

The Fox war drama took the top spot, while the Reese Witherspoon romantic comedy came in second during a week in which four new releases reigned supreme.

Four new releases debuted in the four top spots on both national sales charts the week ending May 27.

The four, with box office earnings of between $19 million and $55 million, also finished in the same order on the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert chart, which tracks overall disc sales, and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc chart.

The roll call: 20th Century Fox’s Red Tails ($49.9 million), a war drama about a crew of African American pilots during World War II, debuted at No. 1. The film, which stars Cuba Gooding Jr. and Terrence Howard, generated 48% of its first-week unit sales from Blu-ray Disc.

Another Fox film, the romantic comedy This Means War ($54.7 million), stars Reese Witherspoon and bowed at No. 2 on both charts. It generated 44% of its unit sales from Blu-ray.

Coming at No. 3 on both charts was Walt Disney Studios’ The Secret World of Arrietty ($19.2 million), a 2010 anime title that moved 43% of its first-week units on Blu-ray Disc.

And debuting at No. 4 on both charts was Sony Pictures’ The Woman in Black ($54.3 million), a horror film starring Harry Potter himself, Daniel Radcliffe, as a young lawyer who discovers the vengeful ghost of a scorned woman in a remote village.

With Fox holding back new releases from Netflix and Redbox and The Secret Life of Arrietty aimed at the sellthrough crowd, The Woman in Black was the only one of the bunch to make the top 20 on Home Media Magazine’s weekly video rental chart, bowing at No. 1.
