Reese Witherspoon gets her African “s” countries mixed up in the first trailer for “The Good Lie.”
The Oscar winner plays a tough-as-nails woman who takes in three Sudanese refugees (she asks whether they’re from Somalia or Senegal) to help them get a fresh start in the U.S.
“House of Cards” alum Corey Stoll, Sudanese actors Arnold Oceng, Ger Duany and Emmanuel Jal, and newcomer Nyakuoth Weil, some of whom were children of war in real life, also star in director Philippe Falardeau’s pic.
Margaret Nagle started writing this Blacklist screenplay 10 years ago. Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and “Blind Side” EP Molly Smith are producing.
Alcon Entertainment will release the pic via Warner Bros. on October 3. It was originally slated for September 10.
Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Wild’ Dated for Awards Season
Fox Searchlight has dated the Reese Witherspoon starrer “Wild” for a Stateside launch on Dec. 5. — a prime release spot for Oscar consideration.
“Dallas Buyers Club” helmer Jean-Marc Vallee directed the drama based on Cheryl Strayed’s hit memoir of the same title. The book recounts Strayed’s 1,000-mile hike alone on the Pacific Crest Trail following years of destructive behavior in the wake of her divorce and her mother’s death.
Witherspoon came on board the project in mid-July when Searchlight acquired rights to Nick Hornby’s adaptation of Strayed’s New York Times bestseller.
Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Gaby Hoffman, Kevin Rankin and Michiel Huisman also star. “Wild” is produced by Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea through their Pacific Standard banner with River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad.
Reese Witherspoon Drama ‘The Good Lie’ Shifts to October Release
It’s Reese Witherspoon versus the Rapture after Warner Bros. pushed the debut of the Oscar-winning actress’ upcoming indie drama “The Good Lie” back a month.
The film, which centers on the bond between an American woman and a young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War, will premiere on Oct. 3, 2014. It will face off against “Left Behind,” the adaptation of the best-selling end times books with Nicolas Cage, and “Gone Girl,” David Fincher’s take on Gillian Flynn’s mystery novel with Ben Affleck.
It will open in limited release. “The Good Lie” was originally slated to debut on September 10, 2014, a date it had to itself. The Tom Hardy crime thriller “The Drop,” the thriller “No Good Deed” and the Tina Fey and Jason Bateman comedy “This is Where I Leave You” all open two days later.
Philippe Falardeau (“Monsieur Lazhar”) directs “The Good Lie” from Margaret Nagle’s screenplay.
Warner Bros. on Board Reese Witherspoon-Sofia Vergara Comedy
Warner Bros.’ New Line has joined MGM to co-produce the upcoming untitled Reese Witherspoon-Sofia Vergara comedy, formerly known as “Don’t Mess With Texas.”
Anne Fletcher is directing from a script by David Feeney (“New Girl”) and John Quaintance. The film is set to begin production this month in New Orleans and will be released on Mother’s Day weekend next year on May 8.
Witherspoon and her Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea will produce the film, along with Dana Fox. Vergara and her manager Luis Balaguer will exec produce.
Witherspoon will play a police officer trying to protect a drug boss’ widow (Vergara) as they race through Texas pursued by crooked cops and gunmen.
MGM and Warner Bros. have previously partnered on the three “Hobbit” films and the upcoming romance drama “If I Stay,” starring Chloe Grace Moretz.
MGM will handle production with Jonathan Glickman and Cassidy Lange overseeing the project. Richard Brener and Michael Disco will oversee for New Line.
Universal Pictures won the rights to the project last June with Witherspoon and Vergara already set to star. MGM picked it up when it went into turnaroud.
Reese Witherspoon’s Lifestyle Company Is Given a Name
Reese Witherspoon’s Southern-influenced lifestyle company has been given a name: Draper James — not to be confused with Mad Men’s Don Draper or anything. (The name is reportedly inspired by her grandparents.)
The Goop-like business also includes plans to open a retail store next year, reports E! news. Items that will be sold include bed and bath products, kitchenware, furniture, stationery, swimwear, fragrances and cosmetics. An official description calls Draper James a brand that “will emphasize [Witherspoon’s] Southern roots and personal style.”
It was announced in March that the Devil’s Knot actress had hired C. Wonder president Andrea Hyde as CEO for her not-yet-named company at the time. Before Hyde’s role at C. Wonder, she was also CEO of French Connection and Nicole Farhi and previously held positions at Kenneth Cole, Gap Inc., Estee Lauder and Calvin Klein.

Reese Witherspoon Hires C. Wonder President Andrea Hyde
C. Wonder president Andrea Hyde has been hired by Reese Witherspoon to be chief executive officer of her as-yet-unnamed lifestyle company. The omnichannel venture, which will emphasize Witherspoon’s Southern roots and personal style, will launch in 2015. Hyde’s last day as president of C. Wonder will be Friday.
Hyde has been a president of Burch Creative Capital since 2011 and, for the past six months, has held the post of interim president of C. Wonder. Utilizing her strength in brand-building over multiple selling platforms, Hyde played a role in incubating multiple brands for Chris Burch. Prior to joining Burch Creative Capital, Hyde was ceo of French Connection and Nicole Farhi for almost eight years, where she was responsible for all aspects of the retail, wholesale and restaurant branded business for North America. She has also held management positions at Kenneth Cole and Gap Inc. She started her career at Estée Lauder and worked at Calvin Klein.
