CAA Sets Rare Public Event With Reese Witherspoon, Jenny Han Among Attendees
CAA has set a new consumer-driven event, Let’s Discuss Live, an afternoon of programming designed to bring readers together with some of today’s most relevant storytellers, thought leaders, entertainers, and innovators for a series of conversations about what’s new and next in the world of books.
Let’s Discuss Live will be held Sept. 16, 2018, in New York City during the Brooklyn Book Festival.
The event marks a rarity for talent agencies, which rarely open their doors to the public.
The lineup will be highlighted by Reese Witherspoon in conversation with bestselling author and comedian Mamrie Hart to discuss their Southern roots and the inspiration behind Witherspoon’s first book, “Whiskey in a Teacup,” before it goes on sale to the public.
“Let’s Discuss LIVE creates an opportunity for our dynamic authors to gather and explore the themes of their books, alongside readers who want to hear conversations as diverse as their own reading lists,” said Kate Childs, executive, CAA Books department.
Other expected to speak will include Jenny Han, Jessica Knoll, Deray Mckesson, and Mark Manson.
Let’s Discuss Live is an extension of the author-driven book events that CAA produces in collaboration with publishing houses. Since adding the service offering in late 2016, CAA has orchestrated multi-city national tours on behalf of former Vice President Joe Biden in support of his memoir, “Promise Me, Dad”; Chrissy Metz’s for “This is Me”; Jenna Bush Hager and Barbara Pierce Bush for “Sisters First”; and a first-of-its-kind experiential tour on behalf of internet personality Connor Franta’s “Note to Self,” among others.
Reese Witherspoon Sets ’70s Rock Drama Series at Amazon
Amazon Studios is ready to rock.
The Jennifer Salke-led streamer and retail giant has handed out a 13-episode order for a limited series based on the Taylor Jenkins Reid’s forthcoming book Daisy Jones & The Six.
The limited series landed at Amazon before it could be taken out to the marketplace. After Reese Witherspoon’s Hello Sunshine acquired rights to the book, Salke got a copy ahead of its March 2019 publication and aggressively pursued the TV rights to the title. The project was never taken to market.
Daisy Jones & The Six centers on a fictional rock band in the 1970s and follows their rise through the ranks of the L.A. music scene and beyond, eventually becoming one of the most legendary bands in the world. Amazon will distribute original music from the series (via Amazon Music), and the print and audiobook from Ballantine/Random House will also be available via Amazon.com and Audible.com.
The Disaster Artist duo Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber will pen the script and will oversee Daisy. Witherspoon and her Hello Sunshine banner topper Lauren Neustadter will exec produce alongside Circle of Confusion’s Brad Mendelsohn. Neustadter and Weber, whose credits include 500 Days of Summer and The Fault in Our Stars, will also exec produce. Author Jenkins will be credited as a producer. The series is a co-production between Amazon Studios, which controls worldwide rights, and Hello Sunshine.
“When I heard Hello Sunshine was developing Daisy Jones & The Six, I tracked down a copy right away and devoured it in one sitting. I loved it so much I had to take it off the market and bring it to Amazon Studios,” said Salke, head of Amazon Studios. “I was immediately struck by how perfectly it fit into our overall approach of bringing passionate creators and entertaining, compelling content to our Prime Video audience. Reese, Lauren and I are kindred spirits!”
Daisy becomes Hello Sunshine’s latest TV foray. In addition to the upcoming second season of awards darling Big Little Lies, the company also has Little Fires Everywhere — starring Witherspoon and Kerry Washington — at Hulu and three shows at Apple, including a morning show drama that she toplines alongside Jennifer Aniston. (Coincidentally, Witherspoon’s Big Little Lies co-star, Nicole Kidman, recently inked a first-look film and TV deal with Salke at Amazon.)
“As soon as I started reading Daisy Jones & The Six, I immediately fell head over heels in love with it, and I’m thrilled to be bringing it to the screen with Amazon and Jen Salke, whose passionate pursuit of the material spoke volumes,” said Witherspoon, who also has a blurb on the book jacket. “With Neustadter and Weber, two writers I deeply admire, stewarding this project, I am so confident that Daisy and her band’s journey toward finding their voice will leave just as permanent a mark with viewers around the world as it did with me.”
The drama marks a big play for Amazon Studios, which was among the bidders for Little Fires Everywhere. With the music rights, Amazon has another revenue stream that could prove profitable for the series in a way akin to what Fox achieved with Glee and Empire.
Daisy joins a roster of scripted fare at Amazon that also includes Lord of the Rings, Jack Ryan, Julia Roberts vehicle Homecoming, Matt Weiner’s The Romanoffs and the recently renewed Man in the High Castle, as well as the Emmy-nominated Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, among others.
Witherspoon, who now has six shows at four outlets, is repped by CAA and Hansen Jacobson. Hello Sunshine is with CAA and Gretchen Rush. Circle of Confusion is with CAA and Howard Abramson. Neustadter and Weber are with UTA, Kaplan Perrone and Sean Marks. Reid is with WME, Circle of Confusion, Park Literary and Media and Bloom Hergott.

Sweet Home Alabama Sequel with Reese Witherspoon? Josh Lucas Says He’d ‘Do It in a Second’
Josh Lucas is ready for a Sweet Home Alabama sequel!
More than 15 years after the romantic comedy was released in 2002, Lucas, who starred opposite Reese Witherspoon (fashion designer Melanie Smooter), is ready to revisit his character, Jake Perry, again.
“I would do it in a second,” Lucas, 47, said about a sequel on Tuesday’s The Talk.
“I think it would be so fascinating and obviously I don’t know where it would go, but I think it would be so fascinating to see where these two characters and the children and where everyone ended up. Are they still together? Are they divorced? Do they want to be back together? I mean, there’s so many different ideas that I think, you know, we all know life is long and complex and they had an interesting relationship to begin with, the two characters,” he explained.
Said Lucas: “I mean, the fact that they were together from when they were children, I would love to see what’s going on 20 years later.”
As Sweet Home Alabama fans remember, the film ends with Witherspoon’s Melanie ditching her fiancé, Andrew (Patrick Dempsey), at the altar after her lawyer informs her — at the last minute — that her divorce wasn’t finalized and she’s still married to her high school sweetheart, Jake.
Nearly two years ago, Witherspoon said in a Facebook Live Q&A session that she’d be happy to revisit her character, Melanie.
“We are not making a sequel that I know of, but if Disney wants to make a sequel they can just call me,” she said. “I would happily make Sweet Home Alabama 2.”
Apple’s Jennifer Aniston-Reese Witherspoon Series Adds Director Mimi Leder
Mimi Leder has signed on to direct and executive produce Apple’s untitled drama series starring Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon through studio Media Res. Leder joins executive producer and showrunner Kerry Ehrin. The series provides an inside look at the lives of the people who help America wake up in the morning, exploring the unique challenges faced by the women and men who carry out this daily televised ritual.
Aniston also serves as exec producer through her Echo Films banner with Reese Witherspoon and Lauren Levy Neustadter through Hello Sunshine; and Michael Ellenberg through Media Res. CNN anchor Brian Stelter consults on the project, with his book “Top of the Morning” providing additional background material.
A television veteran whose credits include “The Leftovers,” “ER,” “The West Wing,” “Shameless,” “L.A. Law,” and “China Beach,” Leder is currently in post-production on the theatrical features “On the Basis of Sex,” which will be released in December from Participant Media and Focus Features. Her other film credits include “The Peacemaker,” and “Deep Impact.” Leder is represented by by CAA, Fourward, and attorney Barry Littman.

Reese Witherspoon’s Draper James Inks New Eyewear License
Marchon Eyewear subsidiary Altair Eyewear Inc. is going into business with Hollywood.
The firm has signed a licensing agreement with Reese Witherspoon’s Southern charm lifestyle brand Draper James. The partnership will see Altair design, manufacture and distribute Draper James optical product. The line holds a sunwear license with B Robinson Optical Inc.
Eyewear will become available to the public beginning in March 2019, and will be on view to wholesale accounts at Vision Expo East. According to the company, the styles will “take cues from Draper James’ vibrant, upbeat ready-to-wear and accessories collections, celebrating femininity with a contemporary take on Southern charm.” The line will range in price from approximately $160 to $215.
Witherspoon, Draper James’ founder and creative director said of the endeavor: “I am thrilled that Draper James is partnering with Altair Eyewear Inc., a leading expert in optical eyewear, to create a new line of glasses. As a lifestyle brand, I feel it’s important to continue to add new categories that meet the everyday needs of our customers both in style and function.”
Marchon’s president and chief executive officer Nicola Zotta added of the partnership: “We are excited to embark on this venture with Draper James, a unique brand with a fresh point of view. We look forward to partnering with Draper James and Reese Witherspoon on expressive optical eyewear collections that complement the brand’s lifestyle and extend the current assortment into an exciting new category and market.”
Nicole Kidman’s Sweet Birthday Gift from Reese Witherspoon
Kidman also celebrated her birthday with her “Big Little Lies” co-stars as they shoot the highly anticipated second season. She revealed, “Reese got me a big ice cream truck, so the crew and all the cast got to have ice cream.”
She added, “I was working, but they say it’s good luck to work on your birthday.”
Nicole and her castmates are working on the new season with another highly acclaimed actress… Meryl Streep! Kidman gushed, “She’s fantastic… She’s passionate, she’s so bright, she just comes in and delivers time and time again far beyond what you expect.”
The cast is hanging out off-set, even going bowling. Nicole admitted, “I am the worst bowler… oh, I’m, like, I need bumpers… but they won’t let me have them because I’m not 4.”
