The magazine is on newsstands today.
“I don’t think I realized [in my twenties] that no one else makes you whole. You have to take responsibility for your own happiness. That took me until I was about 31 to know. It wasn’t easy to realize, Oh, wait, I am purely responsible [for my life]—no relationship, no children, no nothing is going to make you a happy person. Every day you have to choose to find and cultivate your own happiness.” – Reese Witherspoon
Scans from several of the magazines Reese has been featured in over the past few months have been added to the Gallery, including Vogue, People, People Style Watch and Relevant. There are more to come, including a full set of scans from the new Harper’s Bazaar and Glamour issues.

‘I would have fired myself a couple of times during rehearsals because I was so scared, oh my God. I got my shit together, but it took me a while.’ – Reese Witherspoon
Reese Witherspoon is Bazaar’s January Cover Star
Far from the cliché of the all-American blonde, Reese Witherspoon is a sophisticated, intelligent star who revels in making tough choices, in work and in life.
Reese Witherspoon is doing what she does best: playing up for the camera. In this case, that means dancing to hip-hop on the Bazaar photo-shoot, dressed in an A-line Michael Kors skirt that jiggles about her like a starched crinoline. Here she goes again, dipping, bopping and shimmying. Watching her from the sidelines, I have to say she’s fantastically entertaining, her face a rolling cartoon strip of perky expressions. Photo-shoots don’t come easily to all actresses but Reese is, as you might expect, handling herself like a pro.
In keeping with the shoot’s vague premise – a 1950s Beverly Hills housewife going about her day – Witherspoon cranes her neck to look past the assembled crew here in the kitchen towards the front porch. Suddenly, she’s the picture of wifely anticipation, her ears pricked up as if her imaginary husband were just now pulling into the driveway and about to barrel through the door with a cheery ‘Honey, I’m home.’
It’s impressive to see and gratifying to have one’s expectations borne out. Because isn’t this the Witherspoon we know and love? Bright, breezy and boundlessly energetic, the seasoned crowd-pleaser who has been at it since the age of 14, the Southern gal with a gift for comedy. Yes, it is, to an extent. But getting the full measure of this 38-year-old, we’d better not reduce her to that. There is a cautionary tale being told here about Hollywood and the media, and Witherspoon is the one telling it. It goes something like this: ‘Don’t put me in that box. Or any box, for that matter. People are complex, on-screen and off. Can’t we do justice to that?’ It’s a word that comes up time and again in discussions with and about her: complex.

Variety’s Actors on Actors Conversations to Air on PBS SoCal
Variety‘s awards season events continue to grow with the “Actors on Actors” conversations set to be shown on PBS SoCal. The interview show features one-on-one conversations between actors and actresses including Benedict Cumberbatch, Jake Gyllenhaal, Reese Witherspoon and Jessica Chastain in discussion with one another about their craft and films.
Four episodes of the Variety Studio series will air, starting on December 21 at 7 p.m. Subsequent episodes are set for Sunday, December 28 at 6 p.m. and 7 p.m. and on January 4 at 7 p.m. WNET in New York will also air the series, which will be distributed to PBS stations around the country in January. The videos will also stream on Variety.com beginning November 18.
“We have such an incredibly talented and dynamic group of actors joining us for these insightful, intimate one-on-one conversations on the art and craft of acting,” said Variety’s co-editor-in-chief Claudia Eller, “And we are absolutely thrilled to watch our celebrated Actors on Actors pairings jump off the page and into the homes of PBS’ prestigious viewership.”
“Variety is a perfect partner to bring a series like this to PBS viewers,” said Andy Russell, PBS SoCaL COO. “Variety’s great journalism and editorial insight, combined with an extraordinary group of actors, will offer our audiences a compelling inside look at conversations between the leading actors of our time.”
Featured conversations will include: Cumberbatch (“The Imitation Game”) with Edward Norton (“Birdman”), Gyllenhaal (“Nightcrawler”) with Patricia Arquette (“Boyhood”), Josh Brolin (“Inherent Vice”) with J.K. Simmons (“Whiplash”), Oscar Isaac (“A Most Violent Year”) with Gugu Mbatha Raw (“Belle”), Eddie Redmayne (“Theory of Everything”) with Laura Dern (“Wild”), Witherspoon (“Wild”) with Michael Keaton (“Birdman”), Hilary Swank (“Homesman”) with Tilda Swinton (“Snowpiercer”), Keira Knightley “(The Imitation Game”) with Ethan Hawke (“Boyhood”), Jessica Chastain (“A Most Violent Year & Interstellar”) with Mark Ruffalo (“Foxcatcher”), David Oyelewo (“Selma”) with Jack O’Connell (“Unbroken”), Jenny Slate (“Obvious Child”) with Felicity Jones (“Theory of Everything”), Marion Cotillard (“Two Days, One Night”) with Timothy Spall (“Mr. Turner”), Christoph Waltz (“Big Eyes”) with Ralph Fiennes (“Grand Budapest Hotel”), Jennifer Aniston (“Cake”) with Emily Blunt (“Into The Woods”), and James Corden (“Into The Woods”) with Kevin Costner (“Black and White”).
Reese was honoured by Elle for their annual Women In Hollywood celebration, and to coincide with that, she appeared on the cover of their November 2013 issue. Reese took up 2 pages in their spread for the honourees, with a new photoshoot and interview. Read a couple of quotes from the interview below, and find the full thing in the Gallery.
The Thai and Finnish editions of Elle have both reprinted this US cover for their recent issues. See those covers in the Gallery as well.
Reese Witherspoon, on what inspired her to begin producing movies: “I started noticing a couple years ago that I wasn’t seeing women as the stars of movies. I’m seeing them as the guys’ girlfriends, or so-and-so’s wife. I just thought: God, if I don’t start buckling down and start producing some movies, what’s my daughter going to see in the movies?”
Reese Witherspoon, on how her children changed her life: “Somebody was saying to me the other day, ‘Oh, people get less interesting when they have kids.’ I just don’t think that’s true. I feel like I was so confused before I had kids, I almost got in my own way. Having kids made me clearer about who I was as a woman. I just wanted to exhibit good qualities for my daughter. I was a little competitive before I had kids—probably really competitive, to be honest. It really made me let go of that.”
Sounds like Reese will be on the cover of an upcoming issue of US Elle magazine! I can’t wait to see the new photoshoot and interview. My guess is that it will be an issue later this year to promote Devil’s Knot, but we will see ….
