Sneak peek: A-list animals ‘SING’ together

Matthew McConaughey gave his Wolf of Wall Street character a melodic chest-thumping exercise, and now he’s composed a “pump-up” tune to sing to himself as a dapper koala bear.

McConaughey plays the animated animal alongside other A-list voice talent such as Scarlett Johansson and Reese Witherspoon in the family-friendly musical comedy SING, in theaters Dec. 21, 2016, and directed by Garth Jennings (The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy).

Buster Moon has realized the dream of owning the theater that he used to go with his dad, but the place has fallen on hard times with nobody coming for shows anymore. Though his best friend, a black sheep named Eddie (John C. Reilly), doesn’t think it’s a great idea, he decides to put on the world’s greatest singing competition.

“Buster is a salesman and a survivor, eternally optimistic and someone who will do anything to make sure ‘the show goes on,’ ” says McConaughey.

He scrapes together $1,000 for the winner, but thanks to Buster’s doddering old lizard assistant, fliers go out proclaiming a $100,000 prize, causing a stir in the animal world. And as Buster fights for his theater’s relevance, five characters become the top talent in the competition, “all of whom are ultimately trying to define or redefine or find themselves through music and performance,” adds producer Chris Meledandri, founder and CEO of animation studio Illumination Entertainment.

Rosita the pig (Witherspoon) gave up her teenage musical dreams years ago but yearns to be more than just a devoted mom to her 25 piglets. “She rarely has a second to herself, so she finds her moments of freedom intersect with this passion for music,” Witherspoon says. “She embodies and embraces that singer in all of us who just belts it out when no one is looking.”

Ash (Johansson) is a porcupine who heads up an alternative-rock band with her boyfriend, but when she makes it into the competition and he doesn’t, there is some strife. But along the way, she finds enough confidence to be comfortable with herself, Johansson says. “Ash is an artist at heart who discovers her true voice with the support of her friends and fellow artists. In fact, she represents a lot of teenagers going through the same experience of embracing their true selves as they come of age.”

As posted about previously, Reese is one of Glamour magazine’s Women Of The Year for 2015, and last night she attended the awards ceremony in New York to receive her honour. Reese was presented with her statue by Goldie Hawn – one of her acting heroes – and Reese gave an impassioned speech about female empowerment in Hollywood. She wore a pretty blue floral embroidered dress by Erdem for the event; I really love this look on her, and it’s great to see her wearing something new! Reese’s husband accompanied her to the event and they posed together backstage.

Check out our first HQ photos from the night in the Gallery, and scroll on down this post to read Reese’s full speech, articles from the event, and some video footage from the red carpet.

Glamour’s ‘Women Of The Year’ Awards x73

Reese Witherspoon’s Moving Speech at Glamour’s Women of the Year Awards: “Like Elle Woods, I Do Not Like to be Underestimated.”

At tonight’s Glamour Women of the Year Awards, Goldie Hawn presented Reese Witherspoon with an award for her work creating stronger roles for women in film. Witherspoon’s speech was so inspiring and powerful, you’ll want to read every bit of it in its entirety. Here it is, below.

Reese Witherspoon: “I can’t thank Glamour magazine enough and Conde Nast and Cindi for asking me to be here. You just made this night so amazing. These incredible, inspiring women are doing so many things to change how we perceive women, and I hope Amy Schumer and all the other nominees that when you consider making your biopic, you’ll give me the rights first, which would be great. Although Amy, I’ll have to play your grandmother in the movie (by Hollywood standards), and you’ll probably have to play your own mother.

I’m so excited that so many young women are here tonight. This all started for me when I was a little girl. I was 14 years old when I learned that I love acting, and I still do. Acting allows me to slip into the skin of all kinds of different women, and not in a creepy Silence of the Lambs way…but in a way that lets me explore the full spectrum of humanity. Every woman I’ve ever played is passionate and strong and flawed, except for Tracy Flick. She’s 100% perfect, but she made me say that. But I also learned at 14 years old that I was ambitious. Really ambitious. Did I say that out loud? Let’s talk about ambition.

Reese opened the first Draper James store in Nashville a couple of weeks ago. She was supported at the event by her mum and husband, and looked super-pretty in a little dress from her line. We have HQ photos for you in our Gallery, and more information on the opening within this post…

Draper James Nashville Store Opening x23

Draper James Nashville: Reese Witherspoon Opens Her First Store

Reese Witherspoon is many things: actress, wife, mom. And now we can add shop girl to her resume. The Nashville native, who launched her fashion line, Draper James, online six months ago, opened her first brick-and-mortar store with a celeb-filled, Southern soiree.

Ever the charming hostess, Reese greeted her guests (roughly 500 of her nearest and dearest, not to mention Reba McEntire, Faith Hill and Sheryl Crowe), telling them, “This is such a dream come true!”

Witherspoon, the company’s co-founder and creative director—who has been photographed in her designs many times this year—explained why she decided to open the first Draper James store in Nashville rather than Los Angeles or New York.

“Nashville is an amazing city that is full of music, great food and and amazing artists,” she told the crowd. “About three years ago I said, ‘I have got to do something here because, first of all, I’ve gotta move back to the South. It’s just where it’s at!’”

A couple of weeks ago Reese attended a conference in Nashville to teach teenage girls about the importance of managing their money and planning their futures. The conference was sponsored by Draper James. Read more about the event in the posts below, and see some pictures in our Gallery:

Reese Witherspoon hosts ‘Girls Just Wanna Have Funds’ event

One of Hollywood’s most powerful women joined some of Nashville’s on Tuesday night, all to mentor the city’s next generation of female business leaders.

Five hundred girls from Metro Nashville Public Schools and their women mentors and moms gathered at the Music City Center to learn the tools of financial responsibility.

Harpeth Hall graduate Reese Witherspoon, her new 12 South boutique, Draper James, and First Tennessee Bank sponsored the free conference.

“When it came up that it was the YWCA, I was so excited,” Witherspoon said. “We used to go there when I was a little girl and take Jazzercise classes with my mom, and my grandma took bridge classes there. It’s always been an incredible place of resource for women in this city.”

While in Nashville a couple of weeks ago Reese spoke to Vanderbilt University business students about starting up her Draper James company and how she manages her career. Read more below, and see the photos in our Gallery:

Reese at the Vanderbilt Owen Graduate School of Management Q&A x2

Actress Reese Witherspoon opens up to Vanderbilt business students about starting a new retail store in Nashville—and balancing the rest of her life

When actress and Nashville native Reese Witherspoon shot a movie in Atlanta several years ago—smack in the middle of a culinary and artistic renaissance—she realized there were no stores that captured those uniquely Southern experiences, everything from tailgating to sprawling Sunday suppers.

“I was being approached at that time by some big American brands to represent their businesses,” she said during a Q&A with students Oct. 27 at the Owen Graduate School of Management. “But then I thought, ‘why isn’t anybody telling these Southern stories?’”

Witherspoon’s first inclination was to start a blog showcasing the lifestyles of a new kind of Southern woman—those with a cosmopolitan bent who, like her, have come to embrace their hometowns in cities like Atlanta, Nashville and New Orleans (not unlike Witherspoon’s film Sweet Home Alabama).
