London Film Festival: Reese Witherspoon Discusses Kicking Stoves in ‘Wild’ and 2013 Arrest

Reese Witherspoon told reporters on Monday that her 2013 arrest for disorderly conduct may have revealed a side to her that many weren’t aware of.

“I think it was a moment where people realized that I wasn’t exactly what they thought I was,” she said at a press conference for the film Wild at the BFI London Film Festival. “I guess maybe we all like to define people by the way the media presents them, and I think that I showed I have a complexity that people didn’t know about. It’s part of human nature. I made a mistake. We all make mistakes. The best you can do is say sorry and learn from it and move on.”

The actress also revealed that scenes in Wild showing her character’s inexperience at camping were not always acted.

“When you see me putting together the tent, that’s literally me putting together the tent. It took me two hours. I could not figure out the f—ing tent,” she said. “And when I kicked the stove, it’s because I couldn’t make the f—ing stove work.”

Reese Witherspoon says Wild role was ‘hardest’ of career

Hollywood star Reese Witherspoon has said her new film Wild was the most challenging of her career to date.

The Oscar-winning actress plays a young woman who goes on a 1,100-mile hike across the Pacific Crest Trail after the break-up of her marriage.

Based on the memoir by Cheryl Strayed, Witherspoon’s role involves scenes of explicit sex and drug taking.

“It’s the hardest I’ve ever done for many different reasons,” Witherspoon told reporters in London.

“The physicality was really difficult, but after that was the emotional part of it,” she continued ahead of the film’s European premiere.

“The sex scenes were the hardest thing for me to do. I’ve never had to do anything like that in my entire life.

“I had to do all the parts of the movie, the parts that made me feel uncomfortable too, because it is about emotional honesty,” the 38-year-old went on.

The actress, who also co-produced the film, has been tipped as a frontrunner for next year’s best actress Oscar.

Here is the first trailer for Reese’s new movie Wild, which will hit US cinemas on December 5th.

Wild will premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival in September.

In Wild, director Jean-Marc Vallee (Dallas Buyers Club), Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon (Walk the Line) and Academy Award-nominated screenwriter Nick Hornby (An Education) bring bestselling author Cheryl Strayed’s extraordinary adventure to the screen. After years of reckless behavior, a heroin addiction and the destruction of her marriage, Strayed makes a rash decision. Haunted by memories of her mother Bobbi (Academy Award nominee Laura Dern) and with absolutely no experience, she sets out to hike more than a thousand miles on the Pacific Crest Trail all on her own. WILD powerfully reveals her terrors and pleasures as she forges ahead on a journey that maddens, strengthens, and ultimately heals her.

Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Wild’ Dated for Awards Season

Fox Searchlight has dated the Reese Witherspoon starrer “Wild” for a Stateside launch on Dec. 5. — a prime release spot for Oscar consideration.

“Dallas Buyers Club” helmer Jean-Marc Vallee directed the drama based on Cheryl Strayed’s hit memoir of the same title. The book recounts Strayed’s 1,000-mile hike alone on the Pacific Crest Trail following years of destructive behavior in the wake of her divorce and her mother’s death.

Witherspoon came on board the project in mid-July when Searchlight acquired rights to Nick Hornby’s adaptation of Strayed’s New York Times bestseller.

Laura Dern, Thomas Sadoski, Gaby Hoffman, Kevin Rankin and Michiel Huisman also star. “Wild” is produced by Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea through their Pacific Standard banner with River Road Entertainment’s Bill Pohlad.

Reese Witherspoon Talks ‘Weak’ Female Characters And One Thing Women Should Focus On In 2014

What does it take to get to the top — without losing your center? Our “Making It Work” series profiles successful, dynamic women who are standouts in their fields, peeling back the “hows” of their work and their life, taking away lessons we can all apply to our own.

Reese Witherspoon attended a young women’s conference at her teenaged-daughter’s school in Los Angeles, Calif. last month and was in good company: she brought along her own mother, her good friend Mindy Kaling and joined notable women like Maria Shriver and Lisa Leslie for a day of events and discussions.

Witherspoon said of her 14-year-old daughter Ava, “I don’t need to teach her much. She has a lot of self-confidence. I came from a very long line of very strong, hard-working women. So I think she gets a lot of inspiration from her grandmothers on both sides.”

But Witherspoon’s children must certainly garner a healthy dose of inspiration from their own mother, too. Witherspoon won an Academy Award for her performance as June Carter (another fierce woman) in 2005’s “Walk The Line” and currently has four films in post-production, including the smash bestsellers “Gone Girl” and “Wild.” Witherspoon has two children with actor Ryan Phillippe and a toddler with new husband and agent Jim Toth. She might have won Hollywood’s heart in “Legally Blonde,” but she has since proven herself as an extremely talented actor, singer and producer.

The Huffington Post spoke with Witherspoon, 37, about accomplishing everything you want, taking on the challenging role of Cheryl Strayed in “Wild” and what the most important thing women can do in 2014 is.

How do you define success and do you consider yourself successful by that measure?

I think more and more for me, it’s about finding balance between work and family and finding time for myself. I think it’s sort of 30/30/30 — or trying to be at least. Right now it’s sort of like 50/20/5 [laughs]. I think it takes time. You just learn, as you get older, to carve out time for yourself and still accomplish everything that you want. And I’m still in the process of having huge goals and things that I want to accomplish. But I’m trying to do those things while still maintaining a little balance.
