Oprah Talks with Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling About Sexism

Oprah talks with Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon about sexism onscreen and off, and carving a pathway to parity.

It would be tough to pick two more blue-chip Hollywood names than Reese Witherspoon (star and producer of, most recently, the deliciously sinister, labyrinthine HBO series Big Little Lies and Mindy Kaling (whose six-season comedy, The Mindy Project, was the first TV show created by an Indian American). Both wield witchy magic alongside Oprah in the upcoming A Wrinkle in Time, the new film adaptation of the 1962 futuristic fantasy novel, directed by another boundary smasher, Ava DuVernay. When the “O” of O sat down with these two fearless changemakers, they immediately started discussing how far women have come— and where we must go next.

Oprah: I’m so excited to have a conversation with such beautiful, innovative, powerful women—my A Wrinkle in Time costars.

Reese Witherspoon: Thank you for having us! Sitting around and talking is our favorite thing to do.

Mindy Kaling: And it’s nice not to be in harnesses and wigs.

Reese Witherspoon Says ‘Relatable’ Oprah Loves Margaritas and Having a ‘Good Time’

Oprah Winfrey is just like the rest of us, according to Reese Witherspoon.

The actress and media mogul is featured on the cover of the latest issue of the WSJ. Magazine, and Witherspoon, her costar in A Wrinkle in Time, gushed to the outlet about how exciting it was to work together.

Despite Winfrey’s larger than life persona, Witherspoon said the former TV host was refreshingly down to earth. “We had at least four hours doing hair and makeup every day, and Oprah could have had her own trailer,” the actress said.

“But she decided she wanted to do it with Mindy [Kaling] and myself,” she explained.

Winfrey also said she had a blast working with her two famous costars. “I can’t remember the last time I had that much fun,” she told the magazine. “We were fired up. We were alive in that trailer every morning. Reese was the DJ, playing all this old Southern blues music. We listened to more Sam Cooke than I’ve heard since I was a kid.”

Witherspoon and Winfrey share country roots, with the former talk show host moving to the actress’ native Nashville as a teenager. “I think Southern girls have a thing,” Winfrey said.

The duo first met on The Oprah Winfrey Show back when Witherspoon was promoting her film Walk the Line. The actress told the magazine she was not immune to Winfrey’s famous ability to get emotional reactions out of her guests.

“She completely Oprah-Showed me!” Witherspoon admitted. “I burst into tears talking about my high school English teacher.”

WSJ. Magazine’s March Women’s Style issue is on newsstands Feb. 17. It marks Editor-In-Chief Kristina O’Neill’s fifth anniversary issue.

A Wrinkle in Time is out March 9.

The Gallery has been updated today with HD screencaptures from Reese’s first movie – The Man In The Moon. The quality is gorgeous, and there are lots of beautiful shots of young Reese. This is without a doubt one of my favourite Reese films and performances – she carries the film so naturally and confidently, it’s incredible to think that this was her very first acting role. The film itself is summed up just perfectly by famed movie critic Robert Ebert:

Roger Ebert: When this movie was over, I sat quietly for a moment so that I could feel the arc of its story being completed in my mind. They had done it: They had found a way all the way from the beginning to the end of this material, which is so fraught with peril, and never stepped wrong, not even at the end, when everything could have come tumbling down. “The Man in the Moon” is a wonderful movie, but it is more than that, it is a victory of tone and mood. It is like a poem.

“The Man in the Moon” is like a great short story, one of those masterpieces of language and mood where not one word is wrong, or unnecessary. It flows so smoothly from start to finish that it hardly even seems like an ordinary film. Usually I am aware of the screenwriter putting in obligatory scenes. I can hear the machinery grinding. Not this time. Although, in retrospect, I can see how carefully the plot was put together, how meticulously each event was prepared for, as I watched the film I was only aware of life passing by.

Reese fell into this role after she responded to a casting advert in a local paper – she thought it would be fun to try out as an extra in the film. She didn’t know she got the leading role until she was sent the script and noticed her character was on every page!

Reese Witherspoon: “I came in with such innocence, not seeing this as a debut performance but a wonderful summer job! I was so worried I was gonna get fired! It’s like, I’d better learn my lines and I’d better wake up early and be there early for the car to pick me up. I took it very seriously, but I also had a really good time.”
