Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Reynolds Out, Amy Adams & Christoph Waltz In For ‘Big Eyes,’ Tim Burton To Direct

So, where do we start with “Big Eyes”? Well, let’s go with a brief history lesson. Developing for at least six years if not longer, the project comes from Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski (“Ed Wood,” “The People Vs. Larry Flynt,” “Man On The Moon”) and with two big lead roles, over the years Thomas Haden Church and Kate Hudson became attached, and in 2012 Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon were linked, with Tim Burton slated to produce the effort that would serve as the screenwriters’ directorial debut. But it looks Burton is going to take it all for himself with a pretty killer leading duo.

Deadline reports that Burton will direct the movie, that is now set up at The Weinstein Company, in what looks like a welcome 180 for the helmer, and something that’s much more of a small scale domestic drama. The film will tell the true story of married couple Walter and Margaret Keane, who became art world phenomenons in the 1950s and 1960s thanks to their paintings of large-eyed children. However, when they split up, a legal battle ensued, with Walter trying to take credit for paintings which were actually done by his wife. But when it came to a showdown in count, where they actually faced off canvas vs. canvas, Margaret emerged victorious while Walter tried to feign a pain in his arm.

There’s no word yet if this will indeed be next Burton — he’s got a few options — but this kind of casting doesn’t come along everyday, we presume this is on the front cooker for the filmmaker. It has been awhile since we’ve had something to truly be excited about from Burton, but this looks like something that could be genuinely challenging and take him far away from his usual wheelhouse of tropes and tricks. So, fingers crossed.

The first poster and stills for The Devil’s Knot were released by the films production company during the American Film Market back in November. I am only now reading about this – sorry! The still featuring Reese is a close-up shot of her looking forelorn, and you can view it in our Gallery. See the poster and the still of Colin Firth at Bloody Disgusting.

I’ve also come across a journalist’s diary from the time he spent on the set, and you can read his 4 entries here.

‘Mud,’ Starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, Joins Sundance London Lineup

Jeff Nichols’ Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, is one of a trio of last minute additions to this year’s Sundance London.

The sophomore edition of Robert Redford’s British capital-set film and music festival has also added Stuart Zicherman’s A.C.O.D. (written by Ben Karlin and Stuart Zicherman and starring Jessica Alba, Adam Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to the event’s feature film program lineup.

Organizers also said Sean Ellis’ Metro Manila, a film he co-wrote with Frank E. Flowers has been added to the event’s U.K. spotlight sidebar.

Sundance London runs April 25-28 at The O2 venue, the festival’s partner.

Reese Witherspoon in Talks to Star in ‘The Good Lie’

Inspired by real events, The Good Lie centers on a young refugee of the Sudanese Civil War who wins a lottery for relocation to the U.S. with three other lost boys. Encountering the modern world for the first time, they develop an unlikely friendship with a brash American woman assigned to help them, but the young man struggles to adjust to his new life and his feelings of guilt about the brother he left behind.

Monsieur Lazhar’s Philippe Falardeau is set to direct from a screenplay by Margaret Nagle (Warm Springs).

The Good Lie will be produced by Black Label Media, the newly formed production and financing company from The Blind Side’s Molly Smith. Imagine Entertainment’s Brian Grazer, Ron Howard and Karen Kehela Sherwood are producers, with Kim Roth and Reliance Entertainment’s Deepak Nayar as executive producers.

Nagle, who won WGA Awards in 2006 and 2011, developed the screenplay in Imagine Writer’s Lab. She is currently adapting Tuxedo Park for Playtone. Nagle is repped by UTA, Brillstein Entertainment Partners and attorney David Matlof.

Witherspoon has a slew of films on tap, including Mud on May 26 and the forthcoming The Devil’s Knot. She is repped by Management 360 and CAA.

Falardeau’s Monsieur Lazhar was nominated for best foreign-language film last year at the Oscars. He is repped by UTA.

The L.A.-based Black Label Media was formed by Smith, Trent Luckinbill and Thad Luckinbill.

Arnold Oceng: “The film is such a blessing to be part of it’s a personal story to the people of Sudan and it’s a story that needs to be told to the world, and I’m honored to be working with a great cast and crew. Reese is awesome and such a great humble down to earth person who is also a great actor who I am learning from everyday we’re on set.”

Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson Top Our List Of Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Romantic Couples

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, when movie lovers’ thoughts turn to romance films. Older folks might think of putting on Casablanca; Gen X’ers, Say Anything. What does it say about the millennial generation that the most popular love story of their time involves a young lady, a vampire and a werewolf?

That’s why Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson land at the top of our list of Hollywood’s Highest-Grossing Romantic Couples. We looked at the top-grossing romantic movies of the last three years. Twilight was by far the biggest box office winner over that period, earning $1.17 billion.

The fact that we get to track the couple’s off-screen romance along with their on-screen love just adds to the overall romance of the films. The couple is reportedly back together after breaking up over Stewart’s fling with the married director of her film Snow White and the Huntsman.

Pattinson is also a member of the 10th place couple on our list alongside Reese Witherspoon. Their film Water for Elephants earned $59 million in the U.S. in 2011. Those aren’t Twilight numbers, but considering that the movie brought in an extra $58 million internationally and only cost $38 million to make, it was a small hit.

Mud screened at the Sundance Film Festival last nightwith Matthew McConaughey taking on promotional duties because unfortunately Reese was not in attendance. Reviews from the film are coming online, and below are the ones I’ve come across so far.

There is also an interesting interview with Matthew McConaughey up at HitFix, in which he talks a lot about the film.

‘Mud’ Review

‘Mud’ is a great story, but not a particularly great film.

Dripping in regional specificity and broad metaphor, Jeff Nichols’ new film feels more like a big, fat American novel you get assigned in 10th grade than the follow-up to ‘Take Shelter.’ That earlier film’s ominous tone and psychological portraiture is traded-in for large, gestural story beats that itch to be broken down and discussed for their symbolic meaning. When you are done explaining just what Boo Radley represented, then you can sink your teeth into Joe Don Baker’s character “King.”

There are worse crimes, though, than being grand, and ‘Mud”s coming of age tale certainly is that. Young Tye Sheridan plays Ellis, a good kid living “on the river” in Arkansas with an underachieving but caring father and a mother looking for change. He and his buddy Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) discover a boat stuck in a tree on an island, but they also discover a curious dude living there. It is Matthew McConaughey, charismatic as ever, but this time with a snake tattoo and a pistol stuck in the back of his jeans.

The first trailer for Mud was released earlier this week! The movie looks more intense that I had expected, and I think it’s going to be a really interesting film. Reese certainly seems to have a good part.

Along with the trailer comes a release date for the US – April 26th – and an official website – mud-themovie.com.

Watch the trailer below, and find screencaptures from it in our Gallery.
