‘Mud,’ Starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, Joins Sundance London Lineup

Jeff Nichols’ Mud, starring Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon, is one of a trio of last minute additions to this year’s Sundance London.

The sophomore edition of Robert Redford’s British capital-set film and music festival has also added Stuart Zicherman’s A.C.O.D. (written by Ben Karlin and Stuart Zicherman and starring Jessica Alba, Adam Scott and Mary Elizabeth Winstead) to the event’s feature film program lineup.

Organizers also said Sean Ellis’ Metro Manila, a film he co-wrote with Frank E. Flowers has been added to the event’s U.K. spotlight sidebar.

Sundance London runs April 25-28 at The O2 venue, the festival’s partner.

Mud screened at the Sundance Film Festival last nightwith Matthew McConaughey taking on promotional duties because unfortunately Reese was not in attendance. Reviews from the film are coming online, and below are the ones I’ve come across so far.

There is also an interesting interview with Matthew McConaughey up at HitFix, in which he talks a lot about the film.

‘Mud’ Review

‘Mud’ is a great story, but not a particularly great film.

Dripping in regional specificity and broad metaphor, Jeff Nichols’ new film feels more like a big, fat American novel you get assigned in 10th grade than the follow-up to ‘Take Shelter.’ That earlier film’s ominous tone and psychological portraiture is traded-in for large, gestural story beats that itch to be broken down and discussed for their symbolic meaning. When you are done explaining just what Boo Radley represented, then you can sink your teeth into Joe Don Baker’s character “King.”

There are worse crimes, though, than being grand, and ‘Mud”s coming of age tale certainly is that. Young Tye Sheridan plays Ellis, a good kid living “on the river” in Arkansas with an underachieving but caring father and a mother looking for change. He and his buddy Neckbone (Jacob Lofland) discover a boat stuck in a tree on an island, but they also discover a curious dude living there. It is Matthew McConaughey, charismatic as ever, but this time with a snake tattoo and a pistol stuck in the back of his jeans.

The first trailer for Mud was released earlier this week! The movie looks more intense that I had expected, and I think it’s going to be a really interesting film. Reese certainly seems to have a good part.

Along with the trailer comes a release date for the US – April 26th – and an official website – mud-themovie.com.

Watch the trailer below, and find screencaptures from it in our Gallery.

After premiering at Cannes earlier this year, Reese’s upcoming movie Mud will now also screen at the Sundance Film Festival in January! Let’s hope she will make her first trip to the indie fest for 17 years 😉

Sundance 2013: 3 Noncompetition Category Lineups Unveiled

Films featuring Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Jon Cryer will play at the festival in Park City.

The Sundance Film Festival unveiled on Thursday the selections for three noncompetition categories that often produce films that become crowd favorites and which this year feature such stars as Matthew McConaughey, Reese Witherspoon and Jon Cryer.

The festival’s Spotlight section, comprised mostly of international films, focuses on movies that will have screened elsewhere before the festival; Park City at Midnight includes horror, action and other genre films; while New Frontier showcases experimental cinema and also features art installation.

The selections for the 11-day festival’s two remaining noncompetition categories will be announced Dec. 3. In addition to Park City, films will be screened in Salt Lake City, Ogden and Sundance, Utah. The festival runs Jan. 17-27.

There are also a handful of big names appearing in Spotlight and Park City at Midnight films. McConaughey and Witherspoon star in Jeff Nichols’ Mud, about two boys who encounter a fugitive and help him evade bounty hunters. The film is screening in the Spotlight section. Park City at Midnight film Ass Backwards, which features Vincent D’Onofrio, Alicia Silverstone and Cryer, centers on two loveable losers who take a road trip to their hometown to claim the beauty pageant crown that eluded them as children. The film is from director Chris Nelson and screenwriters June Diane Raphael and Casey Wilson, who also star in the comedy.

This year, 113 feature-length films representing 32 countries were selected for Sundance; the haul includes projects from 51 first-time filmmakers — including 27 films that are in competition. These projects were selected from 12,146 submissions, 429 more than last year. There are 16 films in both the U.S. dramatic and documentary competition sections, and 12 films in both the world cinema dramatic and documentary sections.

Lionsgate, Roadside sling Jeff Nichols’ ‘Mud’

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions are in advanced discussions to acquire U.S. rights to Jeff Nichols’ “Mud,” which stars Matthew McConaughey as the title character, along with Reese Witherspoon and Michael Shannon. Distribs plan a 2013 release.

Cannes competition pic was fully financed by Everest Entertainment (“127 Hours”), which produced with overseas distributor FilmNation Entertainment.

Redemptive coming-of-age tale follows a dangerous yet charismatic fugitive named Mud (McConaughey) and his unlikely friendship with Arkansas teens Ellis (Tye Sheridan) and Neckbone (Jacob Lofland), who help Mud escape from the law and bounty hunters. Witherspoon plays Mud’s soulmate Juniper, with whom he’s desperately trying to reunite.

Pic also stars Sam Shepard, Sarah Paulson, Ray McKinnon and Joe Don Baker.

Everest founder Lisa Maria Falcone produced with FilmNation’s Aaron Ryder and Sarah Green, who exec produced Nichols’ drama “Take Shelter.” Everest’s Tom Heller and Gareth Smith exec produced with FilmNation CEO Glen Basner, whose company handled international sales. FilmNation also repped domestic rights along with CAA.

“We have had an extraordinary journey with this film so far, from the rivers of rural Arkansas to the French Riviera, and it is fitting that our next step is with partners like Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions,” said Falcone. “Their teams share our passion for unconventional, unique material, and they have a deep understanding of how to bring such distinctive films to market.”

Reese Witherspoon: “My full-time job is being a mother”

Being pregnant was no obstacle for Reese Witherspoon as far as Cannes is concerned. Though she’s five months along in her pregnancy, Reese was her typically bright and energetic self when she appeared at the fabled French film festival to promote her new film, MUD, starring Matthew McConaughey as a fugitive on the run looking to meet up with his long lost love (Witherspoon). Along the way, he meets up with two young boys anxious to learn about the world. Witherspoon posed playfully with McConaughey along the Croisette, signed autographs for fans, and generally looked radiant while her husband/agent/prospective father of her child Jim Toth was at her side. “This is such a beautiful and happy time in my life and I was very pleased to be able to come to Cannes and support the film,” Witherspoon said. “I play a kind of messed-up country girl in the film but I loved the fact that the story was set in the place where I grew up and was about these two boys learning about the world. I remember what it was like riding dirt bikes and getting into mischief with my brother, and I thought it was a beautiful story that took me back home in a way.”

The 36-year-old Witherspoon was sporting a serious baby bump in her black Versace dress and pink stilettos as she was seen making the rounds of various receptions at the prestigious film festival.

Witherspoon grew up as a part of an affluent family in Tennessee. Her father was distinguished surgeon and her mother was a top surgical nurse and later teaching nurse. She was famously married to actor Ryan Philippe for nine years until their 2008. She admits to having suffered for a time until meeting Hollywood agent Jim Toth two years ago. They were married in March of last year. She has two children from her former marriage to Ryan Philippe, Ava, 12, and Deacon, 9.

I have now finally added photos from last weekend’s Cannes premiere of Mud! Reese dazzled in a midnight blue silk chiffon Versace dress which was covered in Swarovski crystals. Her shoes were Versace, and she accessorised with Chopard jewels. She looked amazing, so elegant and beautiful! I was also happy to spot that Reese’s husband joined her after the screening – see them together here.

Over 500 HQ photos from the premiere can be now be enjoyed in our Gallery – I hope you love them as much as I did! I’ve also added photos from the after party, and additional HQs from the press conference.

Apologies for the delay on this – it’s been a busy week again – but I have now added over 400 HQ photos from last weekend’s Cannes Film Festival Mud photocall! Reese looked chic and pretty in her little black Versace dress and super cute pink heels. Be sure to check out the extremely gorgeous close-up shots towards the end of the album in particular!

I will be uploaded the premiere photos later today/tomorrow…

“I grew up near a river. My brother and I used to do motocross, we went fishing… I felt at home and that is rare on screen. Few films show the Southern United States as it really is. In general, I don’t take on this type of role, but when I read the script, I was reassured to know that this film would ring true.”
