Typically in these newsless final weeks of August, bloggers look ahead to Oscar season and bemoan the shortage of plausible Best Actress candidates. Not this year, though! Might 2010 be the greatest-ever year for the category? In the past week, Oscarologists Scott Feinberg and Peter Knegt both surveyed the field and found a glut of strong contenders. Already we’ve seen Oscar-quality performances from Jennifer Lawrence (Winter’s Bone), Tilda Swinton (I Am Love), and Julianne Moore and Annette Bening (in The Kids Are All Right) — and there are plenty more where those came from.

Other likely candidates include: Lesley Manville (Another Year), Michelle Williams (Blue Valentine), and Naomi Watts (Fair Game) — all performances that have been seen and raved about at festivals.

But they’ll presumably have heavy competition from Anne Hathaway (Love and Other Drugs), Hilary Swank (Conviction), Carey Mulligan (Never Let Me Go), Natalie Portman (Black Swan), Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech), Nicole Kidman (Rabbit Hole), Robin Wright (The Conspirator), Reese Witherspoon (How Do You Know), and Helen Mirren (The Tempest).

And, hey, if any of the above should disappoint, there’s maybe Diane Lane (Secretariat), Jennifer Connelly (What’s Wrong With Virginia), Bryce Dallas Howard (Hereafter), and Diane Keaton (Morning Glory).

(Compare this to last year, when these were our most likely Best Actress contenders heading into September.)

On the other hand, neither Knegt nor Feinberg were able to identify many surefire candidates for Best Supporting Actress, so if things get too competitive in the lead race, an actress can increase her odds by committing category fraud and slumming it in Supporting (which wasn’t really an option in 2010, since Mo’Nique’s victory was a foregone conclusion). Either way, though, we officially have a death match! This year’s Oscars pretty much have to be more exciting than last year’s, right?

How Do You Know is included in Entertainment Weekly magazine’s August 20th Fall Movie Preview feature, and thanks to Kelly we now have scans of this in the Gallery!

The film is also listed on their ’25 Fall Movies We Can’t Wait To See’ feature on their website, and says the following about the movie:

How Do You Know

Directed by James L. Brooks
This romantic comedy follows two people who meet on a blind date on the worst day of their lives. Reese Witherspoon is a professional softball player who’s been cut by the U.S. national team. Paul Rudd is a businessman just accused of shady financial shenanigans thanks to the bad bookkeeping habits of his father (Jack Nicholson). (12/17)

As posted about a couple of days ago, the first trailer for Reese’s new movie How Do You Know has finally been released, and today I’ve made and added 100+ screencaps from it. While I have to admit, the trailer isn’t too special, I think this looks to be a step in a good direction for Reese, and I’m looking forward to this film itself now. Plus, Reese looks so pretty in the trailer!!

The trailer also gives us the address to the official site for the movie – www.howdoyouknow-movie.com – although there is nothing there yet except international release dates.

The Columbia Pictures lot here is decked with poster art for movies due in the coming months.

Bright red graphics promise a new version of “The Karate Kid,” with Jackie Chan and Will Smith’s son, Jaden. Angelina Jolie peers through the title of her action-thriller “Salt.” Letters made of pasta, prayer beads and flowers advertise Julia Roberts in “Eat, Pray, Love.”

But as of last week there was still no poster in the studio’s central walkway for perhaps the most closely guarded of Columbia’s movies this year.

In an era of cut-price filmmaking, the picture in question has an unusually full roster of well-paid stars: Reese Witherspoon, Jack Nicholson, Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd. And while the film business prefers sequels and pop adaptations, and has been shying away from such expensive, star-driven vehicles, this movie tells a complicated, original story about people who might be funny enough, in their own troubled way, to remind Hollywood that it is O.K., occasionally, to buck the trends.

Until recently the project was known publicly as “James L. Brooks Untitled,” Mr. Brooks being the gray-bearded writer-director behind the film. Word is he has decided to use an earlier working title, the stubbornly low-concept: “How Do You Know.”

It is a question without a question mark. Which pretty much sums up Mr. Brooks, a creator of television hits like “The Simpsons” and “Taxi,” who has built an intermittent filmmaking career on near-obsessive observations of the human condition — with laughs. By and large the combination has worked.

To date Mr. Brooks has directed just five films, beginning with “Terms of Endearment” in 1983. That one and two others, “Broadcast News,” a triangle set in the news business, and “As Good as It Gets,” in which Jack Nicholson played the crustiest of curmudgeons, were best picture nominees. “Terms of Endearment” was not only a winner, but also gave Mr. Brooks the rare distinction of picking up separate Oscars as the writer, director and producer of the same film.

I found and added another small batch of photos of Reese on the set of her latest movie How Do You Know? These were taken back in June but they are new to the site.  In other gallery related news, DVD quality screencaps of Reese in Cruel Intentions and The Man in the Moon have been re-added.  I may not always make a post when I add older film content so be sure to check the gallery daily for new additions.

And finally, Glamour is now on Twitter!  You can follow us at @GlamourReese and as soon as we get a new layout up, the latest tweets will be featured on the site as well.

There is so much to get caught up on I hardly know where to start lol.  For tonight, I’ve added a ton of new photos of Reese on the set of her upcoming movie How Do You Know? as well as some photos of her practicing softball as she prepares for the role.  On a sort of related note… it appears as if the old gallery is no longer available and we don’t have access to backups of any of the files.  If someone out there has the scans/photoshoots/photos/etc. from this site saved on their computer, please email me at glamour-reese @ live.com
