Jean-Marc Vallee In Talks To Helm HBO’s ‘Big Little Lies’ With Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon

In what would be his television debut, Jean-Marc Vallee is in talks to direct the first episode and maybe more on Big Little Lies, HBO’s limited series adaptation of the Liane Moriarty novel that will star Oscar winners Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon. The scripts were written by Emmy winner David E. Kelley, and the pending deal with Vallee continues its track as one of the highest-profile limited series packages to come together for HBO since True Detective and it got the same straight-to-series commitment.

As Deadline revealed back in summer, 2014, the book was optioned by Kidman and her Blossom Films production banner partner Per Saari, along with Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea and their Pacific Standard banner. They intended to fashion it as a smart screen vehicle for themselves and that has certainly turned out well.

Nathan Ross, who is Vallee’s producing partner, is joining the project as a producer. The novel is a subversive comedy that tells the tale of three mothers of kindergartners whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder.

Vallee continues to establish himself for getting high-water-mark performances out of actors. After Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto won Oscars for Dallas Buyers Club, he followed that up with the Witherspoon-starrer Wild (both Witherspoon and Laura Dern got Oscar nominations) and he most recently wrapped and premiered in Toronto the drama Demolition with Jake Gyllenhaal, Naomi Watts and Chris Cooper. Fox Searchlight will release that next spring. He is also attached to direct Amy Adams in the Janis Joplin pic Get It While You Can, but I’m hearing that he will do this early next year, first. Ross is Vallee’s manager and David Weber his attorney.

Here’s an interesting interview with Reese’s Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea; Bruna talks about the work she and Reese and are doing, including some of their upcoming projects. Below are the parts that specifically mention Reese/Pacific Standard, click the link at the bottom to read the full article.

Why Australian producer Bruna Papandrea is one of the most powerful women in Hollywood

BRUNA Papandrea is waiting patiently for me in the bar of a slick Sydney hotel.

Hotel guests and staff walk straight past her without batting an eyelid – they’re more interested in the C-list celebrity loitering in the lobby.

But the star-spotters have it all wrong – it’s Papandrea they should be excited about catching a glimpse of.

She might not be a household name, but the 43-year-old Aussie is one of the most powerful women in Hollywood.

Along with business partner Reese Witherspoon, Papandrea owns production company Pacific Standard, and is behind two of the biggest movies of the past eight months: Gone Girl and Wild.

Pacific Standard’s special remit is to create more roles for women in film on both sides of the camera.

“I have a lot of friends who are actresses,” explains Papandrea of their decision to start the company and focus on creating roles for women.

“I’ve read scripts for them for many years and have always been heartbroken at the type of role they were being offered – just girlfriends or wives.

“They weren’t complex women, not like [the male roles], who are at the centre of movies.”

When Witherspoon sat next to Papandrea at a dinner party and mentioned she was no longer being offered any interesting parts, Papandrea was shocked.

“It was astounding to me. If these roles weren’t being developed for big movie stars, then who were they being offered to? Who was developing them? I thought [in order to make interesting films about women] we also need more female directors, writers, technicians and cinematographers.”

‘Big Little Lies’ Limited Series Starring Nicole Kidman & Reese Witherspoon Picked Up By HBO

The premium cable network has picked up the project, originally put together in November.

Big Little Lies is based on the book of the same name by Australian author Liane Moriarty. It is described as a subversive comedy which tells the tale of three mothers of kindergartners whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder.

Witherspoon and her Pacific Standard, along with Kidman and her Blossom Films production banner, optioned film and TV rights to Big Little Lies last year for Witherspoon and Kidman to star and produce with Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea and Blossom partner Per Saari.

The HBO series is being executive produced by Witherspoon and Papandrea through Pacific Standard, Kidman and Saari through Blossom and Kelley through David E. Kelley Productions. Moriarty will have a producing role

Nicole Kidman, Reese Witherspoon Team On ‘Big Little Lies’ Rights Deal

Nicole Kidman and her Blossom Films production banner, along with Reese Witherspoon and her Pacific Standard, have optioned screen rights to The New York Times bestseller Big Little Lies. The Oscar-winning actresses will shape the novel by Liane Moriarty as a star vehicle for themselves. Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard partner Bruna Papandrea and Blossom partner Per Saari will produce with Kidman and Witherspoon.

Big Little LiesThe novel tells the comic tale of three mothers of kindergartners whose apparently perfect lives unravel to the point of murder. The book just got published. Pacific Standard and Blossom Films, both book-smart companies, have been busy. Pacific Standard just produced the Jean Marc Vallee-directed Wild for Fox Searchlight based on the Cheryl Strayed memoir, with Witherspoon starring; the David Fincher-directed Gone Girl; and the untitled Anne Fletcher-directed comedy that stars Witherspoon and Sofia Vergara for MGM and New Line. Books on the Pacific Standard slate include Pennyroyal’s Boot Camp and The Engagements at Fox 2000. Blossom Films is currently filming the Jason Bateman-directed adaptation of the Kevin Wilson novel The Family Fang, with Kidman and Bateman starring together. Blossom produced Rabbit Hole, which got Kidman an Oscar nom, and Monte Carlo. Also in the works are book adaptations of The Silent Wife and Reconstructing Amelia, the latter in development at HBO Films.

Australian novelist Moriarty, who’ll serve in a producing capacity, wrote the bestsellers What Alice Forgot, Three Wishes, The Hypnotist’s Love Story and The Husband’s Secret, along with a line of children’s books.

Jerry Kalajian of the Intellectual Property Group, attorney Matt Sugarman, Fiona Inglis at Curtis Brown Australia and Faye Bender repped the author, while Pacific Standard is repped by Hansen, Jacobson, CAA and LBI, and Blossom is repped by Alan Werthheimer, CAA and Media Talent Group.
