Forbes: The World’s Highest-Paid Actresses 2015

Jennifer Lawrence may have been made famous by The Hunger Games, but she’s certainly not short of bread: The 25-year-old banked $52 million pre-tax over 12 months to be the best paid actress–$16.5 million more than second-ranked Scarlett Johansson, who earned $35.5 million.

For the first time ever, the ranking examined the world’s highest-paid leading ladies to create a truly global list of actress earnings. Despite the broader valuations, only one non-American made the list: Chinese actress Bingbing Fan, who ranked No. 4 with a $21 million haul. Fan, who joins the ranking thanks to roles in movies such as The White-Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom and endorsements with Chopard and L’Oreal, is likely best-known to U.S. cinema-goers for her role in X-Men: Days of Future Past.

Melissa McCarthy, ranked third with $23 million, is the only other actress to bank over $20 million in our scoring period. The Bridesmaids star has proven her ability to carry movies solo–Spy and Tammy grossed a combined $335 million worldwide–and now she’s turning to fashion, launching an all-sizes clothing line.

“I started to think if I could do anything to build women up rather than the constant tear down I’m going to do it,” says McCarthy of her designs, which aim to break down the size barriers within women’s fashion.

The World’s 18 Highest-Paid Actresses earned a combined $281 million before taxes and fees–$660 million less than the 34 World’s Highest-Paid Actors, who banked a cumulative $941 million. Only four actresses made north of $20 million, while 21 actors banked $20 million-plus. We included actresses who earned over $6 million and up, while the male barrier for entry was far higher, at $13 million.

Reese Witherspoon to Star in, Produce Lionsgate’s Supernatural Thriller ‘Cold’

Lionsgate has acquired Cold, an original pitch by Bill Marsilii with Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea producing through their Pacific Standard Films banner. Witherspoon also is attached to star. A source pegs the deal at mid- to high-six figures.

The plot is being kept under wraps but has been described as a dark thriller with supernatural elements.

Lionsgate’s Eric Feig and Gillian Bohrer were the first buyers to hear the pitch, and quickly bid on the material.

Since its launch in 2012, Pacific Standard has been on a tear, scooping up a number of best-selling female-centric books like Gone Girl and Wild (both scored best actress nominations for stars Rosamund Pike and Witherspoon, respectively). The company is already in business with Lionsgate on a big-screen adaptation of best-seller Luckiest Girl Alive. Among the other Pacific Standard projects in development are Ashley’s War at Fox 2000 and All Is Not Forgotten at Warner Bros.

Witherspoon and Papandrea also are behind Disney’s Tink, a live-action take on the Peter Pan character Tinker Bell (Witherspoon will star in the titular role).

This week, the company inked an overall deal at ABC Studios (Pacific Standard is producing the limited series Big Little Lies, a straight-to-series order at HBO that Witherspoon will star in opposite Nicole Kidman).

Marsilii is currently adapting the sci-fi action comic Sebastian X at Voltage, with Gale Anne Hurd producing and Martin Campbell attached to direct. He co-wrote, with Terry Rossio, the Tony Scott-directed Deja Vu, starring Denzel Washington, which set the record for highest spec script sale ever when Disney and Jerry Bruckheimer acquired it in 2004 for $5 million.

Marsilii’s other projects include 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea: Captain Nemo and Lightspeed (both at Disney) as well as Blood of the Innocent at Lotus.

Marsilii is repped by ICM Partners and Lichter, Grossman, Nichols, Adler & Feldman.

Witherspoon is handled by CAA, LBI Entertainment and Hansen, Jacobson, Teller, Hoberman, Newman, Warren, Richman, Rush & Kaller.

Reese Witherspoon & Bruna Papandrea’s Pacific Standard Inks ABC Studios Deal

Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea’s three-year-old production company Pacific Standard is making a foray into broadcast television with an overall deal at ABC Studios. The two-year pact, which is exclusive in broadcast, comes on the heels of Pacific Standard’s first TV greenlight, for limited series Big Little Lies, which recently received a straight-to-series order at HBO. The adaptation of Liane Moriarty’s best-selling novel, written by David E Kelley, stars Witherspoon and Nicole Kidman.

Under the deal with ABC Studios, which is run by EVP Patrick Moran, Witherspoon and Papandrea plan to hire a dedicated TV executive to work alongside Pacific Standard creative executive Jeanne Snow.

ABC Studios, home of such female-centered dramas as Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, recently departed Revenge and the upcoming Quantico, toplined by Priyanka Chopra, is a good fit for Witherspoon and Papandrea, who have built their company with the goal of helping make films with strong female leads. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Patrick and his team at ABC Studios, a company who genuinely share our goal of creating great roles for women, ” Witherspoon and Papandrea said.

Since Pacific Standard Films’ launch in 2012, the company produced features Wild, which earned Witherspoon an Oscar nomination, David Fincher’s thriller Gone Girl, as well as the Warner Bros. summer comedy Hot Pursuit. The company also will produce Disney’s Tink, a live-action take on the classic Peter Pan character Tinker Bell, in which Witherspoon will star in the title role, and Pale Blue Dot at Fox Searchlight. Pacific Standard’s feature development slate also includes Ashley’s War at Fox 2000, Luckiest Girl Alive at Lionsgate, and All Is Not Forgotten at Warner Bros.

In TV, the company has Supreme Courtship, an adaptation of the book by Christopher Buckley, set up at Sony Pictures TV’s TriStar Television.

“As evidenced by Reese and Bruna’s award-winning film track record, their eye for material is unparalleled,” Moran said. “We’re very excited to be their television partners.”

The deal was brokered by CAA.

Reese Witherspoon to Receive American Cinematheque Award

The American Cinematheque will honor Reese Witherspoon with its annual award Oct. 30 at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza, the org announced today (July 23rd).

Witherspoon was most recently Oscar-nominated for lead actress in 2014’s “Wild,” which was produced by her Pacific Standard production company.

Rick Nicita, American Cinematheque chairman said: “Reese Witherspoon’s career is a perfect example of an actress flourishing in today’s world. She achieved commercial success early in comedies like ‘Election,’ ‘Legally Blonde’ and ‘Sweet Home Alabama’ and then added major critical success to her resume with movies such as ‘Walk the Line,’ for which she received the Academy award for best actress. She has refused to be limited to only certain types of roles and has continued to impress with her varied choices, ranging from smaller roles in dramas such as ‘Mud’ to a tour-de-force, Oscar-nominated performance last year in ‘Wild.’ She is an active and successful movie producer who is moving her career forward both behind and in front of the camera. The most appropriate role for Reese Witherspoon today is role model.”

The annual gala is a major fundraiser for the American Cinematheque and honors actors in mid-career who are making significant contributions to the film biz. Matthew McConaughey was last year’s honoree.

Besides “Wild,” Witherspoon’s Pacific Standard, in which she is partnered with Bruna Papandrea, also produced last year’s “Gone Girl.” She has also been active in charities including the Children’s Defense Fund, on whose board she serves; the Rape Treatment Center at Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center; Save the Children; and Stand Up to Cancer.

Reese Witherspoon At Center Of ‘All Is Not Forgotten’ Novel Deal By Warner Bros

Warner Bros late last night closed a significant preemptive acquisition of the GG Walker novel All Is Not Forgotten. Warner Bros president of Creative Development and Worldwide Production Greg Silverman was at the center of this one himself, with Reese Witherspoon and her Pacific Standard producing partner Bruna Papandrea producing. Deal happened right after the book sold to St. Martin’s Press following a five house bidding battle, with plans to publish spring, 2017. The author used a pseudonym but she is Wendy Walker, the author of Four Wives and Social Lives, which also were published by St. Martin’s Press. The movie deal was in the mid six figure against $1 million range.

Warner Bros will be getting more aggressive on the book front, and it seems to make a good deal of sense given the outsized success American Sniper meant to the studio. The studio also wants more with Witherspoon and Papandrea, who’ve proven themselves book savvy producers who last year produced both Gone Girl and Wild. They’ve been a catalyst for other movie deals including Fox 2000’s acquisition of Ashley’s War, the Tzemach Lemmon book about an elite group of women who fought alongside Green Berets and Army Rangers in Afghanistan.

Right now, Witherspoon is producing, but Warner Bros will court her to play a key role. Book is an adult thriller about a teenage girl in picturesque suburban Connecticut who is brutally attacked and raped, and the secrets that emerge during the course of the investigation. Witherspoon will be courted to play the girl’s mother, who decides with her husband to give their daughter a pill to erase her short term memory so she won’t relive the trauma of the rape.

This is Warner Bros’ third project with Witherspoon. They are developing the Maureen Sherry novel Opening Belle and the recently published Second Life by SJ Watson. CAA reps Witherspoon and Watson, who is represented for publishing by Wendy Sherman Associates.

Inside Harper Lee’s Lost Novel Go Set a Watchman: Reese Witherspoon and Others Weigh In

As the literary world awaits Tuesday’s publication of Harper Lee’s long-awaited second novel Go Set a Watchman, the prequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, Yahoo Global News anchor Katie Couric sat down with Reese Witherspoon and others involved in the project.

The actress, who has been tapped to record the audio version of the forthcoming novel, tells Couric she’s in awe of Go Set a Watchman, which features Mockingbird’s Scout as an adult woman living in New York City in the 1950s.

“It shocked me, as being a modern woman in 2015, reading some of the words. I had to keep reminding myself it was written in the ’50s, and these were the complex issues that people of the day were dealing with,” she says. “And old attitudes and modern thinking was just evolving about race relations in our country. So I think you will feel all that complexity in the piece.”

Lee’s long-lost manuscript, which will be the first work she’s published since 1960, was discovered in a safe deposit box last August by the author’s lawyer, Tonja Carter, and later passed along to publishing house HarperCollins, the publisher of To Kill a Mockingbird.

“Nobody quite knew where it was. The author, Harper Lee, didn’t know where it was,” says Jonathan Burnham, senior vice president and publisher of Harper, an imprint of HarperCollins.

Burnham says the book was unedited when Lee’s literary agent and Carter came to them after consulting with Lee. “Jean Louise, who is Scout as a grown woman, is a 26-year-old girl working in New York City who goes back to her home town of Maycomb and visits her father, strikes up old friendships, visits characters that we remember from Kill a Mockingbird,” he explains. “It’s the story of that particular visit and what happens on that visit.”

Lee’s first novel, published in 1960, was an instant sensation, winning her a Pulitzer Prize. It was later made into an Academy Award-winning film.

“I thought she was extremely courageous to write that book about her hometown,” says Mary Tucker, a retired African-American schoolteacher from Lee’s hometown of Monroeville, Alabama, who lived through segregation. “Of course, she said it was fiction but we could identify some of the characters from people in town.”

Rick Bragg, a former New York Times journalist and bestselling author from Alabama adds of Lee, “She wrote the story that explained us to ourselves. A lot of us, you know, were not piebald racists. A lot of us knew that the cruelty that came to light in our region was dead wrong. But she put it in a story.”

Abi Morgan To Adapt ‘Ashley’s War’ For Fox 2000 And Reese Witherspoon

Fox 2000 has set Abi Morgan to adapt the Gayle Tzemach Lemmon book Ashley’s War: The Untold Story Of A Team of Women Soldiers On The Special Ops Battlefield. The studio, led by Elizabeth Gabler, won an auction in March at a time when several military-themed books were selling after the outsized grosses of American Sniper. Pacific Standard’s Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea are producing with Natalie Krinsky, and the expectation is that Witherspoon will play a major role. Book tells the story of the creation by the U.S. Army Special Operations Command of a pilot program that allowed elite women soldiers on the battlefield with Green Berets and Army Rangers in Afghanistan in 2010. The unit, CST-2, brought together a hand-picked group of women from the Army, and that included 1st Lt. Ashley White, who would become the first CST member killed in action.

Morgan is best known for scripting the Steve McQueen-directed Shame, and the Meryl Streep-as-Maggie Thatcher drama The Iron Lady. She followed with the Sarah Gavron-directed Suffragette, which stars Streep, Helena Bonham Carter, Carey Mulligan and Brendan Gleeson, with Focus releasing the film on October 23. She co-wrote the Suzanne Bier-directed Rules Of Inheritance, is adapting Shakespeare’s Taming Of The Shrew and is working on the feature version of Little House On The Prairie for producer Scott Rudin and Sony.

Morgan is repped by CAA and Independent Talent Group.

Reese Witherspoon Developing ‘Napkin Notes’ Memoir for the Screen

Reese Witherspoon and Bruna Papandrea’s Pacific Standard banner is developing a film adaptation for New Line of Garth Callaghan’s memoir “Napkin Notes: Make Lunch Meaningful, Life Will Follow.”

Witherspoon and Papandrea will produce “Napkin Notes,” which New Line optioned last September. Mike Binder, whose credits include “Black or White,” “Reign Over Me” and “The Upside of Anger,” has come on to adapt the script. Toby Emmerich, Andrea Johnston and Richard Brener are overseeing for New Line.

Callaghan’s book, published by HarperCollins, details how he began writing short inspirational notes on napkins to put in his daughter Emma’s lunchbox daily to connect with his daughter. The practice took on far more significance after Callaghan was diagnosed first with kidney cancer and subsequently received four other cancer diagnoses.

“Napkin Notes” is Pacific Standard’s ninth development project. Witherspoon and Papandea formed Pacific Standard in 2012 in order to remedy the absence of movies with female protagonists. They have since produced “Wild,” “Gone Girl” and “Hot Pursuit.”

The banner has been developing Jessica Knoll’s “Luckiest Girl Alive” at Lionsgate, Gayle Tzemach Lemmon’s “Ashley’s War” at Fox 2000, S.J. Watson’s thriller novel “Second Life” at Warner Bros. and Maureen Sherry Klinsky’s upcoming novel “Opening Belle” with an eye to Witherspoon starring in the Wall Street comedy. Pacfiic Standard is also developing an adaptation of the novel “Big Little Lies,” “The Engagements,” “Pennyroyal’s Princess Boot Camp” and “The Outliers.”

Witherspoon is repped by CAA and Rick Yorn at LBI Entertainment. CAA, which packaged the deal, represents Pacific Standard and Callaghan.

News about “Napkin Notes” was first reported by the Tracking Board.
