Luke Wilson backs Reese Witherspoon for Legally Blonde 3

Actor Luke Wilson is fully on board with Reese Witherspoon’s plan for Legally Blonde 3 because he’d like “win everyone back” after the second flick flopped.

The 44-year-old star appeared as Emmett Richmond in the first two movies, the love interest of Reese’s ditzy character Elle Woods. The actress recently suggested a new sequel could be a good idea, and Luke is giving her his full backing.

“Actually I ran into Bob Newhart who was in Legally Blonde 2, which I didn’t know,” he told talk show host James Corden. “When I met him he introduced me to Mrs Newhart: ‘Ah, Luke and I were in what was voted the worst movie of all time.’ I didn’t know that. Apparently it wasn’t as highly thought of as the first one… that’s why we need to do three, to win everyone back.”

24 star Mary Lynn Rajskub had a small part in the second film and coincidentally appeared on James’ TV show alongside Luke. She is also happy to get involved with a new movie – as long as her character, the Sheriff’s wife called Reena Giuliani, features on screen. Although the 2003 movie represents one of the smaller roles Mary has taken on, she recently had an experience which proves it is an enduring favourite.

“I was out of town doing a stand up gig – I’ve done other work other than Legally Blonde 2 – and I went into a gym on a day pass and the woman recognised me,” she laughed. “Legally Blonde 2 was the only movie she’d ever seen and she took me around the gym and she was like, ‘You’re Reena!’ And I was like, ‘No, my name’s Mary Lynn.’ ‘You’re Reena. From Legally Blonde 2.’

“She was like a martial arts champion and she just watched Legally Blonde 2 over and over to get pumped up.”

Reese spoke about the possibility of a new Elle Woods film while appearing on US TV show Fashionably Late With Rachel Zoe, and she appeared to show it’s something she’s dedicated a lot of thought to.

“I actually think it’s kind of great right now because we’re talking about women in politics and how important that is to get more women,” she said. “And I think it’d be kind of a cool thing to have her be a Supreme Court justice or someone who runs for office.”
