Reese Witherspoon thinks it can be “dangerous” when movie stars don’t have hobbies.

The 34-year-old American actress is one of Hollywood’s most successful stars, having achieved critical acclaim for her roles in films varying from light-hearted comedies such as Legally Blonde to dramas including Walk the Line, the 2005 movie for which she won the best actress Oscar.

Reese takes her acting seriously, although is adamant her career will never rule her life. She has witnessed other A-list stars who have let jobs ruin their personal lives, and she has no plans to follow suit.

“I like to take classes, I read a lot – I have a lot of interests so your whole life isn’t just about making movies. That’s a dangerous place to be,” she asserted.

Reese admires Hollywood icons such as 61-year-old Meryl Streep, who has been nominated for an astounding 16 Academy Awards during her career, and has won two. However, the actress doesn’t intend on working quite as hard as Meryl, and counts spending time with her and ex-husband Ryan Phillippe’s two children; 11-year-old daughter Ava and seven-year-old son Deacon, as more important.

“As an actress, it would be lovely to think that we’re all Meryl Streep or Diane Keaton who just works endlessly but that’s not true,” she told Total Film.

“It’s important to cultivate a personal life that makes you just as happy as your professional life and I work really hard on that. I spend time with my kids and my girlfriends. It’s important to enrich yourself in lot of different ways.”

Vanity Fair released their Hollywood’s Top 40 list – an annual ranking of Hollywood’s biggest earners, which includes actors, producers and directors.

Top of the list is James Cameron, who earned an estimated $257 million dollars in 2010. The bulk of his earnings came from the 3D blockbuster Avatar.

Uber-hottie Johnny Depp made a huge leap from 21 in 2009 to number two in 2010. He earned $100 million from his movies Alice in Wonderland (also a 3D flick), Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides and The Tourist alongside Angelina Jolie (who is three spots behind Jennifer Aniston at number 21).

Steven Spielberg, Christopher Nolan, Leonardo DiCaprio, Tim Burton, Adam Sandler, Todd Phillips and Robert Downey Jr make up the rest of the Top 10.

The success of the Twilight series had turned its stars Taylor Lautner (9), Kristen Stewart (13) and Robert Pattison (15) into hot property, with all of them listed in this year’s list.

Rapper-turned-actor Will Smith fell short of the top 10 coming in at 11. He is on course to turning his kids, Jaden and Willow Smith, into top earners if rumours of an Annie remake are anything to go by.

Other stars who made it onto the list are:

Tyler Perry (17), Jennifer Aniston (18), Sandra Bullock (22), Daniel Craig (28), Tom Cruise (35), Reese Witherspoon (36) and Eddie Murphy (40).

The King’s Speech enjoyed a three-week reign at the top of the UK box-office, but the challenge of new Disney animation Tangled proved too strong, given its £5m-plus opening, and so moves down to make way.

The Tangled result follows similar success in many international territories, notably Germany and France, where it’s taken 26.4million Euros and 22.8million Euros respectively. The Rapunzel-themed film represents a major recovery for Walt Disney Animation Studios, after last year’s commercially disappointing Princess And The Frog, which was presented in traditional 2D animation.

The King’s Speech dips a modest 14%, the natural pace of decline presumably arrested by a renewed burst of publicity on the back of last week’s 12 Oscar nominations, and wins at the Directors Guild and Screen Actors Guild awards. Fellow awards contender Black Swan falls an even gentler 6%.

Both films will do well to maintain this slow burnout pace this weekend with the arrival of The Fighter, and again a week later with True Grit. The King’s Speech has now taken nearly £25m after just 24 days, while Black Swan has exceeded £7m in less than half that time.

Three other new films made the top 10. Jason Statham hitman flick The Mechanic did best, with a solid debut of £922,000 – towards the top end for films featuring the actor as the principal selling point. Clint Eastwood’s Hereafter managed a less-impressive £602,000, hampered by discouraging reviews and a lack of attention for the afterlife-themed film from awards-giving bodies.

Least successful of all is James L Brooks’ latest comedy How Do You Know, starring Reese Witherspoon, Paul Rudd, Owen Wilson and Jack Nicholson, which opened to a disappointing £375,000. Production budget is a rumoured $100m, and at this point looks set to be a significant cash loser for backers Sony.
