Movie stars often talk about how they aren’t really like the characters they play on screen.

Reese Witherspoon proves the point with silence. Her character Lisa in How Do You Know, the new James L. Brooks comedy opening Friday, is as taciturn as Witherspoon is talkative.

“I’ve never really played a character that wasn’t very verbal,” she said in an interview. “I mean, all I do is talk in movies!

“So this is a nice departure for me, to learn to, as my mother always says, ‘Never miss an opportunity to shut up and listen!’”

Good thing Witherspoon didn’t heed that advice making Walk the Line, the 2005 Johnny Cash biopic, where she played June Carter Cash and both talked and sang her way to an Oscar.

In How Do You Know, Witherspoon’s plays a baseball star who would rather get in touch with her ball and glove than her emotions. She amusingly finds herself romantically involved with two men: stereotypical jock Matty (Owen Wilson) and sensitive businessman George (Paul Rudd). (A fourth character, played by Jack Nicholson, is there to complicate their lives in other ways.)

If this were a real-life romantic triangle and not a movie, Witherspoon would be talking the ear off a sympathetic friend or family member.

“Oh, yes. I talk endlessly about my romantic conflicts, my loves lost and gained — my life is a non-stop dialogue with my friends. So this very interior character, who knows she’s feeling things but she’s not sure what they are, really doesn’t know how to talk about them.

“And when people want to talk about it, Lisa wants them to stop talking. It’s a really interesting woman to see on film. Conversely, Paul’s character just can’t stop talking!”

So what would Witherspoon tell her intimate associates, if she were to find herself in the unlikely position of having two suitors at once? Which of the two guys, cocky Matty or chatty George, would she choose?

Getting to ‘Know’ Reese Witherspoon
Witherspoon plays struggling athlete caught in love triangle in new comedy

Reese Witherspoon steps out of her comfort zone for her newest comedy, “How Do You Know,” opening Friday.

In this film from James L. Brooks (“Terms of Endearment,” “As Good as It Gets”), Witherspoon, 34, plays Lisa, a fading softball champion who juggles two suitors (Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd). The role takes her leagues away from the lovably perky Elle Woods of her “Legally Blonde” hits.

“The biggest challenge for me was that she’s not verbal, and I’m used to playing really talkative characters, women that speak about their relationships and talk about love and dynamics and boys with their girlfriends,” the Oscar-winning actress (“Walk the Line”) told reporters recently in New York.

“She’s like, ‘Shut up. I don’t want to talk to you right now. I have to go.’ That was a new character for me.”

But true, she discovered, for the female athletes she met.

Jack Nicholson Reviews His Kiss with Paul Rudd

Fans have seen Jack Nicholson play everything from a retired astronaut in ‘Terms of Endearment’ to a raging alcoholic in ‘The Shining,’ but in his new movie ‘How Do You Know’ Jack plays a character that causes the actor to reveal a softer side of himself that audiences aren’t necessarily used to.

‘How Do You Know’ follows Lisa (Reese Witherspoon) a young woman caught in between two men: George (Paul Rudd), a businessman, and Matty (Owen Wilson), a professional baseball player.

Jack plays Paul’s father in the movie, who showers his son in kisses. The Oscar winner tried to describe how he felt locking lips with Paul.

“I kissed him so many times,” said Jack, at the Hollywood premiere on Monday. “I had all kinds of emotions.”

Paul called his smooch scenes with Jack an experience he’ll never forget.

“I think I kissed him in every scene,” said Paul. “I think that might be a record for me.”

Owen savored his role as a man who doesn’t hold himself to social conventions.

“He’s one of these guys who doesn’t really have a filter,” said Owen. “He just kind of says what comes into his mind.”

While filming, the cast received a surprise that Reese revealed on the red carpet, saying, “We were shooting in Washington D.C. and we thought, ‘Maybe we can get in [the White House]?’ so we called somebody and took a tour. And as we were on the tour we got a message that the President wanted to say hi and he had just seen ‘I Love You Man’ and he loved Paul’s performance, and it was really exciting.”

‘How Do You Know’ hits theaters Friday, December 17.

Jack Nicholson referred briefly to Reese and his other How Do You Know co-stars in a recent press interview for a film:

He [writer-director James L. Brooks] is kind of close to me. I’ll always work with Jimmy. He’s probably the best screenwriter in the world. You know you are going to get great material. He always casts wonderful actors, look at us all [in How Do You Know]. That, plus you really get to work with, and I accent the adjective, a dear friend. A couple of Oscars didn’t hurt [laughs]. That cemented the relationship. Then, you know you’re in love [laughs].

Oh yes, I learned a lot from this cast. I’ll tell you a story about Owen Wilson. As soon as I got to the set, he asked me if I wanted to go out and shoot machine guns [laughs]. I’m like, “Oh my God, this guy thinks I’m adventurous!”

Reese Witherspoon was starstruck working with acting legend Jack Nicholson on her new comedy How Do You Know.

“Oh my gosh, it blows your mind when you walk on set and there he is,” the actress admitted on the red carpet at the film’s LA premiere.

“He’s standing there and he’s laughing, smoking a cigarette, and you’re like ‘Oh my god this is not really happening’,” she laughed.

In the film by Oscar-winning writer-director James L. Brooks, Reese stars alongside Owen Wilson and Paul Rudd who she claims were equally in awe of Nicholson.

“I think Owen and Paul and I were all pinching ourselves every day we worked with him,” she joked.

Paul and Owen’s characters in the movie are pitted against each other in a love triangle with Reese’s character at the centre.

Of working with the pair, Reese said: “They’re just guys, they’re really funny you know, Owen tells funny jokes.”

She added: “It’s nice to come to work and be able to laugh and have people around you that are just inherently funny.”
